    The Whitehall High School Athletic Hall of Fame will enshrine its third class, the Class of 2018, later this month. The Induction Ceremony will take place Saturday, March 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Whitehall High School Varsity Gym in Whitehall.   • Supreme Court rules against appeal

    The Montana Supreme Court issued an opinion last week ruling against an appeal involving an unsuccessful 2016 recall petition in the Town of Whitehall. The court affirmed a Fifth Judicial Court order denying the payment of attorney fees, costs, and disbursements for former Mayor Dale Davis and four town council members. The five elected officials were seeking reimbursements from Jefferson County Election Administrator Bonnie Ramey and recall petitioner Lynn Nemeth.     The 2018 Jefferson County Spelling Bee took place Feb. 14th in the courtroom of the Jefferson County Courthouse. This year's Celebrity Pronouncer was 5th Judicial Judge Luke Berger. Judges for the County Bee were board members from Basin Elementary, Boulder Elementary, and Cardwell Elementary.     E. Tim Opie passed away peacefully on February 26, 2018. Tim was 77 years old. Tim was born May 19, 1940 to Francis (Bo) Opie and Ruth Opie. Tim was the second child of four, and grew up moving from Substation to Substation for the Milwaukee Railroad, at times riding the freight train to school. His favorite town was East Portal, he sang a little jingle about not wanting to leave there.     Stanley James (Stan) Speck, 71, of Helena died at home on Saturday, January 27, 2018, of pancreatic cancer. He was born at the Hill Hospital in Whitehall, Montana, on September 8, 1942, the middle child of E. Carroll and Phyllis Speck with two older and two younger sisters. He attended Whitehall schools, graduating in 1964. There were early indicators that he would become an expert plumber, carpenter, electrician, mechanic and builder when, during his school years, he built his own motorcycle.     The Town of Whitehall conducted a meeting late last month to obtain public comment to assist their pursuit of grants that will not only help the town meet their water requirements with the Department of Environmental Quality, but to also benefit future community development. It was very unfortunate the town water levels tested above the acceptable limit for Uranium in 2015, but it did happen.
