Michael Siebert, UM Community News Service|Mar 15, 2017

After uncertainty about how the upcoming special congressional election would change the makeup of the Montana Legislature, the nomination of Democrat Rob Quist and Republican Greg Gianforte means it's back to business as usual at the state Capitol. Multiple legislators had announced their intention to run for the vacant congressional seat after former Rep. Ryan Zinke was nominated and then confirmed as U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Sen. Ed Buttrey, R-Great Falls, and Reps. Amanda Curtis, D-Bu...

Michael Siebert, UM Community News Service|Mar 15, 2017

The main state budget bill at the Montana Legislature passed first reading last week with some surprises, like the restoration of $11.5 million to higher education funding, and some expected cuts. But one area has consistently struggled to find funding throughout the entirety of the 65th Montana Legislative session — special education. Funded through a combination of federal dollars and state funds, special education has seen minimal increases in state funds, leaving local and federal dollars to pick up the slack, according to a report by...

  • Editorial: Great decision by Whitehall School Board

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Mar 15, 2017

At a meeting last week, the Whitehall School Board of Trustees voted to rehire K-5 Principal Britt McLean and 6-12 Principal Hannah Nieskens. Prior to the vote, Superintendent John Sullivan lauded the two administrators and recommended them both for rehire. While it was certainly not a surprise, it was a great decision by the Board. The two are both assets to the not only the school, but the community. They are different in personality, but it is very obvious they both care about the students, teachers, staff and community. They both have the t...

  • Column: A big pink boot

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Mar 15, 2017

When I first made a trip to Whitehall to look a purchasing the newspaper, I visited during that strange time when the wind was not blowing. After growing up in Southwest Wyoming where the wind never seems to stop, I thought to myself if I move to Montana it is not only going to be so great to get some beautiful scenery, but also to a place with not as much wind. I was so right about the scenery, but I think I just so happened to visit on the only two days of the year when the wind wasn’t blowing. Growing up with wind I’m used to it, but I...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Mar 15, 2017

Crossing the Jefferson River on Highway 359 to the left is what I like to call ‘the hundred acre woods’. Winnie the Pooh isn’t around, but the trees scarred from a fire a few years ago, make the area captivating with imagination. With Spring approaching some of the trees will be turning green and the foliage on the floor of woods will come to life. The herons will build their nests in the tops of the trees that are suitable. The adventuresome child inside of me would like to investigate the woods and find a special hiding place. March...

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Mar 15, 2017

Billings -- Not playing your best at the state tournament, at least in the opening round, proved to be a downer for the Whitehall High School boys basketball team. But after falling 69-55 to eventual runner-up Anaconda on Thursday in the second game of the 2017 Class B tourney at Rimrock Auto Arena, the Trojans bounced back with two victories -- 71-56 over Lodge Grass on Friday and 64-62 over Missoula Loyola on Saturday morning -- before losing 52-42 to Shelby in the third-place game Saturday...

  • The shot: Feight nails game winner at state

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Mar 15, 2017

Years from now people in Whitehall will still be talking about "the shot". But let's back up a little bit first. The Whitehall High School boys basketball team was in a hard fought battle with Missoula-Loyola at the Class B State Tournament in Billings. The ebb and flow of the game seemed perfect for the setting and importance of the contest early Saturday morning. The winner would be moving on with a chance to get a third-place trophy at state, the loser's season would be coming to an end....

    Jeannie Ferriss, Whitehall Community Library|Mar 15, 2017

There are six different federations in Montana, which are divided into different geographical regions. The Broad Valleys Federation has 21 member libraries and stretches from Helena to Dillon. It includes large libraries such as Bozeman Public, medium libraries such as Whitehall, and smaller libraries. Some of the members are libraries which are a combination of a school and community library, such as the...
