Trojans shine at opening meet

The Whitehall High School track team had some strong individual performances at their season opening meet Saturday at the Sheridan Invite in Dillon.

Leading the way for Whitehall was junior Braden Smith who placed in all five of his events. Smith finished third in the triple jump and 200 meters, fourth in the high jump and 100, and fifth in the long jump.

“That’s a full load and he competed very well,” said head coach Dan Lacey.

Sophomore Cade Briggs was also strong for Whitehall with a second place finish in the long jump. Lacey said Briggs achieved a preseason goal by qualifying for state with a jump of 20’ 1/2”.

“I’m excited to see how he progresses throughout the year. He had two jumps on the day that he just barely scratched and they were on the mid 21’ range,” Lacey said.

On the girls side, Lacey said Alycia Loomis and Alexys Mercer both had very productive days for the Lady Trojans. Loomis finished in second place in the javelin, and Lacey said she is already ahead of her pace from last year that got her to Divisionals.

“She’s worked very hard in the offseason to put in a lot of time with her technique. It’s already been paying off,” he said.

Mercer placed third discus and sixth in the shot put.

“Alexys has been battling a sore shoulder the past couple weeks, so I am very proud of her working and taking care of her body to get it ready for the meet and she performed well,” Lacey said.

The Trojans will next compete April 20 in Livingston. Lacey said the boys team was able to place fifth in Sheridan and were missing 10 of their athletes.

“So it will be fun to see how we stack up in team points in the next upcoming meets,” he said.
