Editorial: The positives far outweigh the negative

As is the case with any small town, there were plenty of rumors floating around Whitehall about what happened during a shooting incident April 15. While some of the information spreading around was not true, some of it was. Even though the story wasn’t what many thought, it is always tough to see crime in a small town. As sad as it is, crime does happen in Whitehall and other small towns across the United States. Nowhere is immune from this. Nobody should turn a blind eye to drug use or violence because it does happen, possibly more than some could imagine.

With that being said, it is also important to remember the positive parts of a community. Whitehall is a great community and a few bad eggs will never ruin that. I’m well aware there is a story about the shooting incident on page 1 of this edition, but look at the rest of the stories on the front page. They are all positive things coming from the great people in the area. There is a story about a huge fundraiser, one about a clean up event, and two about students who are doing great things. There are so many incredible residents in this community and this newspaper tries to highlight as many of them as possible. It would be nice if some people focused more on the positive, but take a look at the evening news and the lead story usually isn’t pretty. That is unfortunate, but with this publication I try to put as much positive as I can.

The positives of this area certainly outweigh the negatives. If people are concerned about violence or drug use, they need to take proactive steps to remedy the problem. Be good neighbors and be vigilant, if something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t. There is no need to live in fear or more away because of a few incidents
