Great district meet for Trojans

Things are clicking at the right time of the season for the Whitehall High School track team.

Competing at the District 5B meet last week in Bozeman, the Trojans had strong individual performances on both days of the competition.

The Whitehall boys team shined over the two day meet finishing in third place with 90 points, just behind second place finisher Manhattan, who tallied 99. Townsend finished in the first place with 147 points. The Lady Trojans were also impressive, with several strong individual marks and placed fourth as a team despite having only seven girls competing.

"The team as a whole did of great job of competing. The one thing I enjoy the most about our team is how they cheer each other on. Everyone wants to see each other do well which is something you don't see very often with a team as a whole. I'm very impressed on how they have come together and I'm looking forward to the next challenge that awaits these athletes at the divisional meet," head coach Dan Lacey said.

In action Friday, Lacey highlighted several strong performances from Whitehall, including Alycia Loomis finishing second in the javelin with a personal best throw, Asha Noyes making the finals in the 100 meters, and a strong day from senior Ann Russell who placed third with a season best long jump, made the finals and qualified for state in the 100 meters and placed second and qualified for state in the 200 meters.

Other highlights from Friday listed by Lacey were Cade Briggs finishing third in the long jump with a personal best and state qualifying jump, Andrew Simon and Braden Smith finishing third and fourth in the javelin, Wyatt Alexander (state qualifier), Max Feight, Jake Flynn, Steven Japhet and Braden Larsen all making it to the finals of the 100 meters, Japhet placing fourth in the 400 meters with a personal best time and Hunter Flynn placing fifth in the two mile.

Lacey added they also had great contributions from Colby Smith, Sawyer Keener, Dawson Hoerauf, Hannah Tebay and Clint Parks.

In Saturday action, Lacey said the team also had many great performances including the 4x100 relay team, Russell in the 100 and 200 meters, and Max Feight placing second in the 110 hurdles.

This Thursday the team will travel to the Divisional Meet in Laurel.

"My expectations for the week are to continue to get better and understand what's at stake. The top 8 places in each event get to represent our school and community at he state meet in Butte. Just thinking about that atmosphere gets me fired up to go watch our athletes compete," he said.
