Chamber lights contest returns

The Whitehall Chamber is inviting local residents to participate in their second annual Christmas Lights Contest.

Chamber officials have stated the event is a way of encouraging the entire Whitehall community to decorate and beautify their homes during the winter holiday season.

Chamber Treasurer Jill Dove said the inaugural event went well in 2016, and is excited to see what last year’s first prize winners Bill and Catherine Navarro do for 2017.

“The first year for any sort of event is always the toughest. I know there are several other festive houses in Whitehall that maybe just didn’t know about the contest so didn’t submit the entry form. Jefferson Fresh Foods was gracious enough to donate a prime rib and holiday ham for prizes last year and is doing the same this year. The top prize was $100 in chamber bucks, which we will do again this year,” Dove said.

Entries are due to the Whitehall Chamber November 30 at 3 p.m., and houses must be fully decorated and lit for judging by December 6. The winners will be announced on the Whitehall Chamber Facebook page on December 9.

The second place finisher will receive the prime rib and third place will receive a holiday ham donated by the local grocery store.

Although the Chamber was pleased with the contest in 2016, Dove said on the other hand the business Christmas Light Contest was not so successful.

“We only had two entries. We heard from the community that we should not make the businesses enter, but rather just select the most festive business, so that’s what we are doing this year,” she said.

With the deadline just around the corner, Dove is hoping for a great contest this year.

“It would be amazing to see a huge turnout. I want families to have the same experience so many of us did growing up. I remember when I was younger we would pile in the car with hot chocolate and drive around looking at Christmas lights listening the Christmas music. I want our town to be festive and jolly. It is the time of year that brings families and friends together,” she said.
