Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

WHY Whitehall?

The local resident to answer questions for this week's "WHY WHITEHALL" is Katherine Smith. She is currently working for Jefferson County and with Montana State University Extension as the Madison-Jefferson County Ag and 4-H Program Assistant.

How did you end up in Whitehall?

By the grace of God. I was pretty much destined to be here as both sides of my family (Careys and Smiths) have been farming, ranching and living in the area for many years.

How long have you lived here?

It's hard to believe, even for me, and will probably make some people feel old, but this coming spring will be 30 years!

What is something unique about you?

I am a 4th generation Montana rancher that raises sheep and enjoys family history/genealogy.

What do you appreciate most about the community?

Folks from Whitehall and surrounding areas have the biggest hearts. People around town are very kind and super helpful to new people to the area or those going through town and I have witnessed on multiple occasions how our community rallies and comes together for a cause. We should be very proud!

If you could give one bit of advice, what would it be?

Stop and smell the roses. Get to know the people around you. Keep an eye out for each other. Learn what your neighbors' and friends' occupations are or were and who their family is. You will be amazed at the stories you hear and learn that we have some very impressive people around our little town.

Where is your favorite place to be in Whitehall?

I would have to say Borden's Hotel or the Star Theatre. These buildings are some of our oldest in town and have so much history. I am thankful for the many remodeling efforts which will allow all of us to enjoy these locations for many years to come. Go check them out!

How would your friends describe you?

I have been told that I am Caring, Confident, Funny, Kind and Smart.

Who would play you in a movie?

I would probably have to say Melissa McCarthy. I love her movies! She is a bit shorter than me but just as funny.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

That would have to be my Family Science degree from Montana State University... GO CATS!! And being honored for raising some of the best lambs in Montana.

What keeps you in Whitehall?

I have stayed in Whitehall because I love being around my family and friends.
