Lady Trojans hosting Manhattan

After four tough road battles, the Whitehall High School girls basketball team is returning to Varsity Gym for a Thursday night battle against Manhattan.

In their first matchup this season, the Lady Trojans battled hard in the first quarter and only trailed 17-12 at the end of the period. The Lady Tigers were able to take control of the game in the second quarter after Whitehall had foul trouble with starters Allee Scafani and Dorothy Mastel. Manhattan would end the night with a 57-33 victory.

Lady Trojans Head Coach Kelly Nieskens said a key for the Thursday night game will be to stay out of foul trouble.

"It really changes how we adjust the game plan," he said.

With their final home game of the season Thursday, Nieskens said it is always nice to play in your own gym.

"Having the added support can help with small victories, which can snowball," he said.

In action last week, Whitehall dropped two road contests, the first a 55-32 loss Friday night at Big Timber.

Whitehall trailed by just one (7-6) at the end of the quarter, and by eight at half, (25-17).

"I thought against Big Timber we played two quarters really well, we showed how we really are capable of playing. It was the other two that really got us into a hole, it's tough for us to get out of those holes," Nieskens said.

The Lady Trojans were led in scoring by sophomore standout Asha Noyes who had 14 points. Mastel was also in double figures with 10 points. Allee Scafani finished with four, and Britney Welker and Hope Slater each had two points.

Whitehall was upended 74-31 Saturday by the top ranked team in the state, Three Forks.

After falling behind 18-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Trojans responded well with 16 second quarter points.

"We've struggled at times this year to just settle down and play. It's something we need to learn to do from the very start of the game," Nieskens said.

Mastel led the team with 16 points, Noyes had nine, Slater finished with five, freshman Kendra Klapan added four and Scafani chipped in two points.

Whitehall will return to the road Friday when they travel to Gardiner for a non-conference matchup.
