Trojans wrap up season

After a year of success for Trojans athletics, the 2017-18 sports season came to an end last Saturday at the Class B State Track Meet in Laurel.

Much has been the case all season -- Whitehall High School had some strong individual efforts at state.

"As a whole we had I felt our track team represent Whitehall very well. We had numerous athletes make the finals in numerous events and that's all you can ask for is to give yourself a chance to be one of the top 10 best in Class B," said head coach Dan Lacey.

One day before his high school graduation, senior Braden Smith shined in his final high school meet finishing third in the triple jump. Smith set a personal best triple jump of 43' 3/4".

Lacey said another performance he was very proud of was junior Max Feight finishing seventh in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, adding he was solid throughout the year in both events. Lacey said junior Cade Briggs performed very well, making the finals in the long jump and javelin.

On the girls side, Lacey said senior Alexys Mercer once again stood out making the finals on the shot put. She has out a lot of time in and it paid off making it to finals at the state meet.

Lacey praised the entire senior class for their efforts over the past four years.

"Coaching this group of seniors was a great experience. There is so much going on at the end of the year from academics, to graduation, they found time to stay dedicated and committed to track and I was very proud of the efforts they put forth throughout the season," he said. "Our seniors have helped to build our numbers within our program and continuing to compete throughout the spring sports season is great for here athletes. "

Looking back on the season, Lacey feels his team got better every week.

"The great thing about track is you get to compete against yourself. That's what all the great competitors enjoy. With track you always have a chance to better yourself. I really felt our athletes did that this year and understanding how to compete against yourself helps you in so many ways not only in athletics but also in life after high school as well. Throughout this track season our athletes always went out and gave their best and that's all you can ask for," he said.
