  • An all time great: Feight reflects on career, future

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Sep 26, 2018

One can only imagine the number of lifetime sports memories Max Feight would have created in his senior year at Whitehall High School. But a vivid memory of one of Montana's top prep athletes will be a crushing injury, basically a 3-in-one happenstance in the first offensive series for the Trojans at Colstrip. The WHS quarterback wasn't even hit, but he heard a pop and there went a full tear of the ACL and partial tears of the meniscus and LCL of his right knee. He was in a scramble mode on the...

  • "Iron Nine" finish season undefeated

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Jun 13, 2018

Just call them Whitehall's Iron Nine. The reference is to the Whitehall Majors, the age 11-12 baseball team that completed its 2018 season with a perfect record. They were 12-0 in the regular season before going 3-0 in the championship tournament, wrapping up the title in Whitehall on June 2. In the tournament, the Majors team outscored its three opponents by a staggering 33-3 margin, getting past Three Forks 14-2, Townsend 10-0 and Manhattan 9-1. Making this team unique is that the roster has...

  • Trojans win two at state tournament

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Mar 15, 2017

Billings -- Not playing your best at the state tournament, at least in the opening round, proved to be a downer for the Whitehall High School boys basketball team. But after falling 69-55 to eventual runner-up Anaconda on Thursday in the second game of the 2017 Class B tourney at Rimrock Auto Arena, the Trojans bounced back with two victories -- 71-56 over Lodge Grass on Friday and 64-62 over Missoula Loyola on Saturday morning -- before losing 52-42 to Shelby in the third-place game Saturday...

  • Trojans headed to Divisional

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Feb 22, 2017

BELGRADE -- Imagine the score being 20-2. Imagine no longer because that was the score -- Whitehall 20, Three Forks 2 -- after one quarter en route to a resounding 62-33 victory Monday night in the challenge game of the District 5B boys basketball tournament. "We were definitely ready to play," Whitehall junior Wyatt Alexander said after scoring 16 points to lead the Trojans. "We had energy at the start." Still, being up 18 after one quarter while limiting the Wolves to just two free throws,...

  • Trojans learn from 2016 5B District tournament

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Feb 15, 2017

They remember. Oh how they remember. The reference is to the 2016 District 5B tournament in Belgrade when the Whitehall High School boys basketball team went 0-2, thus failing to advance to the Divisional. The Trojans entered as the No. 2 seed, which earned them a bye in the first round. But they didn't play like the team that earned that bye and saw their season end. Whitehall coach Zach McLean and three of the team's top players – Braden Larsen, Andrew Simon and Max Feight – now echo sim...

  • Experiencing the joy of victory

    Abe Winter, For the Ledger|Feb 8, 2017

Victories have been scarce for the Whitehall High School girls basketball team. Let's count 'em. Two when this season's seniors were freshmen, zero when they were sophomores and one when they were juniors. That's right, three seasons, three wins. So when the Lady Trojans won their sixth game of the 2016-17 season on Saturday night against Gardiner, that made it three more than the entire previous three seasons. Yet the joy of competing and developing -- they hope -- lifetime friendships were utmost in the minds of the likes of diminutive...
