It was in September 1944 that Anne Frank and the inhabitants of the Secret Annex arrived at Auschwitz and it seems fitting that the Library will begin its third year of the Holocaust Project. The Holocaust Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, September 28th at 6 PM and is open to teens and adults. Due to the topic content, it is not recommended for children under 12. I really love the fact that the children and young adults who come into the Library get along, no matter if they are homeschooled, private schooled, or public school. It is fun to watch them interact and share information about what they are doing, studying, and participating in outside of the school day. All Library programs are open to anyone who wants to participate, and this gives families from every type of education a chance to mingle and make new friends. Librarians love to snitch ideas from other libraries and share their ideas with others. I recently ended up on the St. Louis Public Library’s newsletter list;: I’m still not sure how. It gives all of the different programs they do during the week, future events, and relevant news. It seems like this summer flew by. I can’t believe I am putting the notice in this week’s column that we will be closed on Labor Day, September 4th. We will be open on Saturday for regular hours and again on Tuesday. The Library follows the County closing schedule so if anyone isn’t sure if we will be closed or not just look at the front door. The Library was filled with the sound of young chefs as the 6th-grade orientation class visited on Monday and Tuesday to learn how to make their own nutritious lunches. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, students were able to make a variety of dishes for lunches including ham/turkey wraps, chicken & fruit salad, trail mix, and apple snacks. This summer is flying by, and I can't believe that Summer Reading ended this week. We will still have prizes from the store available through the middle of August for our readers who are on vacation. It was so much fun to create our own program that we decided to do it again next year. The Rockhounding Group will meet on Monday, July 17th, at 5:30 PM at the Library. Somehow it didn't make it on July's calendar, but they are ready to get back at it and plan great things for those who love geology, mineralogy, and just finding beautiful rocks and crystals. I don’t know about you, but all this rain has caused a huge influx of birds in my yard. Since my ability to identify birds ranks up there with my cooking talent, we are having a special summer reading program on Wednesday, July 12, at 10:30 AM. This Thursday at 5 PM the Whitehall Community Library will hold Middle Teen Madness for any young person who likes to play games and is 12 years of age or older. There will be snacks and all types of board games. This is a great chance for new residents and old, to come and meet new friends or just spend time with old ones. Our Summer Feeding program began on June 12th, but I wanted to remind everyone that there are free lunches at the Library every day, Monday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. The Great Library Treasure Mystery is open for registration at the Library on June 1st. The rules are simple: readers receive prizes for every ten footprints completed. In order to fill in a footprint one must read for 15 minutes to someone else or to themselves. The program is open to anyone birth to 120 years old and registration sheets are for the entire family this year. The Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in honor of Memorial Day. We will be open regular hours the rest of the week. One question I get asked every summer is: Will the Library be open different hours? Our schedule is set for the year according to when we have the most patrons in and what times are best for different programs. We are open 48 hours a week, which is more than many libraries our size. I just finished reading James Patterson's new Women's Murder Club novel, "The 23rd Midnight" and it started me thinking about why mysteries are so popular after decades of different authors and titles. The first reason patrons tell me they are such mystery fans is almost all mysteries are series with anywhere from 3 to 40 different books. The familiarity with the settings, characters, and type of mystery gives them comfort that the next book will be like meeting old friends for a new adventure....
It was quite the Arbor Day celebration here on Friday, April 28! We had 159 preschoolers and elementary children here for some great activities with Deanna Mydland from PBSKids. Everyone was sporting nature crowns, bird feeders, and miniature working lung machines. It was a wonderful day and we loved having Deanna here! This Friday is our celebration of Arbor Day with Deanna Mydland! We are so excited to have her come as she spends the day doing all three story times and extra programming for the older kids in the afternoon. Feel free to stop by at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, or 1 PM for Story Time or anytime in the afternoon until 4 for older children. By the time you are reading this, I will be in sunny Los Angeles with our Holocaust Project teens. They have been busy preparing for the Survivor/Rescuer Fair on April 20th. The evening will begin with a presentation by Cindy Busarow at 6 PM on her family's journey from Germany and those who did not escape. With all of the controversy surrounding libraries these days, I thought it would be nice to let everyone know how the Whitehall Community Library serves the public and why. Curiosity Untamed is moving from Thursdays to Mondays starting April 3rd. They are also changing their meeting time to 1 PM. This is a permanent change so more people will be able to join Diane Jensen as she leads the group in memory activities, new skills, and even Marco Polo adventures.
