October is the month for special programs and the Library is hosting two great local speakers. On October 12th at 6 PM you are invited to come and hear a history of the Lewis & Clark caves by Kenslee Jory. Then in the vein of local history, Arlene Weber will be here on October 17th at 6 PM to share the history of Whitehall. For those who have lived here their whole lives or new residents alike, these will be great nights to learn about our local history. The Knitting group has expanded to include anyone who has a handcraft they want to finish...

Fall is here and with it come the fall holidays. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for October 9th, as the Library will be closed for Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day. I have one calendar that calls it one thing and another that calls it the other, so I am going with both. We will be open the rest of the week for regular hours. Next Thursday evening, October 12th, at 6 PM the Library will be hosting a program on the history of the Lewis & Clark Caverns. Our favorite VISTA volunteer, Kenslee Jory, will be sharing all sorts of fun facts and the...

It was in September 1944 that Anne Frank and the inhabitants of the Secret Annex arrived at Auschwitz and it seems fitting that the Library will begin its third year of the Holocaust Project. The Holocaust Book Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, September 28th at 6 PM and is open to teens and adults. Due to the topic content, it is not recommended for children under 12. The project covers Holocaust Literature, awareness projects such as the Survivor/Rescuer Fair, trips to Holocaust museums, speakers, conversations with survivors, and...

I really love the fact that the children and young adults who come into the Library get along, no matter if they are homeschooled, private schooled, or public school. It is fun to watch them interact and share information about what they are doing, studying, and participating in outside of the school day. All Library programs are open to anyone who wants to participate, and this gives families from every type of education a chance to mingle and make new friends. That being said, the two homeschool roundup groups met last week and are planning...

Librarians love to snitch ideas from other libraries and share their ideas with others. I recently ended up on the St. Louis Public Library’s newsletter list;: I’m still not sure how. It gives all of the different programs they do during the week, future events, and relevant news. This fall we will be doing between 10 to 14 programs a week and having ideas from other libraries will help us vary and increase our programs so they never get stale. Coming up with different story time ideas, after school events, and adult programs always works the s...

It seems like this summer flew by. I can’t believe I am putting the notice in this week’s column that we will be closed on Labor Day, September 4th. We will be open on Saturday for regular hours and again on Tuesday. The Library follows the County closing schedule so if anyone isn’t sure if we will be closed or not just look at the front door. We try to post closings a week in advance so everyone can see them. History Book Club will meet on Monday, August 28th at 6 PM. We are reading something from everyone’s to-be-read pile. Readers always...

The Library was filled with the sound of young chefs as the 6th-grade orientation class visited on Monday and Tuesday to learn how to make their own nutritious lunches. Thanks to the Friends of the Library, students were able to make a variety of dishes for lunches including ham/turkey wraps, chicken & fruit salad, trail mix, and apple snacks. Rockhounding will meet on August 21 at 5:30 PM. This is a great time of year to get out and explore the wonders of the Treasure State. If you are...

It feels like fall, smells like fall, and looks like fall but I am still not ready for the seasons to change. To help me get in the mood for September, I have almost finished the September calendar. There are programs for everyone and here are a few of the highlights set for next month: • Rodger Richmond of Richmond Appraisal Service is doing a four-week antique appraisal for anyone who would like to discover what their treasures are worth. He will be in the Library from 5 PM to 7 PM on T...

This summer is flying by, and I can't believe that Summer Reading ended this week. We will still have prizes from the store available through the middle of August for our readers who are on vacation. It was so much fun to create our own program that we decided to do it again next year. The ability to tailor the programs, themes, and crafts to our readers is a better fit for us than a national program. Brandi and I met with our friends at the school and set times and themes for Friday morning...

I can't believe we only have two weeks of summer reading left! Where did this summer go? On Wednesday, July 19th, at 10:30 AM Kyle Graves will be here for our annual magic show. Then on Wednesday, July 26th, at 10:30 AM we will have our end-of-the-summer reading program party and store for everyone who participated in the summer reading program. It will be a great time for everyone. If you have worked in libraries as long as I have, you may be lucky enough to discover a patron who loves your...

The Rockhounding Group will meet on Monday, July 17th, at 5:30 PM at the Library. Somehow it didn't make it on July's calendar, but they are ready to get back at it and plan great things for those who love geology, mineralogy, and just finding beautiful rocks and crystals. The group is open to anyone who loves rockhounding and patrons may join at any time. The Friends will be meeting this Thursday, July 13th, at 5 PM. They have had a busy summer with lunches, summer reading, and the book sale....

I don’t know about you, but all this rain has caused a huge influx of birds in my yard. Since my ability to identify birds ranks up there with my cooking talent, we are having a special summer reading program on Wednesday, July 12, at 10:30 AM. The Mystery of Birds will be presented by the newest VISTA volunteer at the Lewis & Clark Caverns, Kenslee Jory. Come and learn all about the different bird varieties in Montana and the Whitehall area. On July 13th at 2 PM Miss Brandi will be opening up her mad laboratory to explore the secrets of c...

This Thursday at 5 PM the Whitehall Community Library will hold Middle Teen Madness for any young person who likes to play games and is 12 years of age or older. There will be snacks and all types of board games. This is a great chance for new residents and old, to come and meet new friends or just spend time with old ones. The Library will be closed on the Fourth of July for the holiday but open on Monday and Wednesday for regular hours. We are having a special guest on Wednesday at 10:30 AM for Summer Reading as a friendly wizard is stopping...

Have you ever wondered what murders and mysteries lay unsolved in the Whitehall area? Arlene Weber of the Jefferson Valley Museum will be at the Library on Thursday, June 22, at 6 PM to share a great night of historical mysteries and mayhem. This program is for families, adults, and anyone who delights in local history. The History Book Club is meeting at their regular time on Monday, June 26, at 6 PM. Our Summer Feeding program began on June 12th, but I wanted to remind everyone that there are free lunches at the Library every day, Monday through Thursday from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. This year Action, Inc. has included breakfast snacks as well as lunch in the bags. Just stop by and pick up breakfast and lunch for any child under the age of 18. Next week will be a busier week than usual at the Library. Monday starts us off with Curiosity Untamed at 1 PM and Rockhounding at 5:30 PM. The Rockhounders will be discussing their field trip from last...

Summer Reading registrations are pouring in and next week's Wednesday program will be Rhea Armstrong and "The Mystery of Montana Animals" at 10:30 AM. The rest of the month will include the annual puppet show on June 21st and a Detective Kit Making Workshop for future crime fighters on June 28th. The Great Library Treasure Mystery is open for registration at the Library on June 1st. The rules are simple: readers receive prizes for every ten footprints completed. In order to fill in a footprint one must read for 15 minutes to someone else or to themselves. The program is open to anyone birth to 120 years old and registration sheets are for the entire family this year. This will save parents or guardians of multiple readers from having to fill out individual forms. The calendar is all set...

Summer Reading is almost here, and we are celebrating with a mystery. Readers from birth to 120 may sign up at the Library for a summer of free lunches, prizes, programs, and great books. We are going to sign up families together so those with multiples will not have to fill out forms for everyone. The program begins on June 5th and the June calendars are available at the front desk. The Great Library Treasure Mystery will run until July 27th, and anyone may sign up anytime during June or until July 27th. We understand that many of our...

The Library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in honor of Memorial Day. We will be open regular hours the rest of the week. One question I get asked every summer is: Will the Library be open different hours? Our schedule is set for the year according to when we have the most patrons in and what times are best for different programs. We are open 48 hours a week, which is more than many libraries our size. Current hours for the Library are as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 AM to 7 PM; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM to 7 PM; Fridays...

I just finished reading James Patterson's new Women's Murder Club novel, "The 23rd Midnight" and it started me thinking about why mysteries are so popular after decades of different authors and titles. The first reason patrons tell me they are such mystery fans is almost all mysteries are series with anywhere from 3 to 40 different books. The familiarity with the settings, characters, and type of mystery gives them comfort that the next book will be like meeting old friends for a new adventure....

It was quite the Arbor Day celebration here on Friday, April 28! We had 159 preschoolers and elementary children here for some great activities with Deanna Mydland from PBSKids. Everyone was sporting nature crowns, bird feeders, and miniature working lung machines. It was a wonderful day and we loved having Deanna here! This week is National Children's Book Week and in honor of Cinco de Mayo, we will be having a special story time on Friday with international tales and treats! Then on May 12,...

Feel free to stop by at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, or 1 PM for Story Time or anytime in the afternoon until 4 for older children. Homeschoolers may bring their families all together during any of the programs. As always, craft supplies will be provided, and the programs are free to everyone at the Library. May will be a slower month at the Library...

By the time you are reading this, I will be in sunny Los Angeles with our Holocaust Project teens. They have been busy preparing for the Survivor/Rescuer Fair on April 20th. The evening will begin with a presentation by Cindy Busarow at 6 PM on her family's journey from Germany and those who did not escape. The Holocaust Project teens will represent a survivor or rescuer from the Holocaust and tell their stories as visitors stop at each exhibit. The program is free and open to the public...

With all of the controversy surrounding libraries these days, I thought it would be nice to let everyone know how the Whitehall Community Library serves the public and why. First, our goal is to make lifelong learners of everyone from birth to 140. Reading is a portal into thousands of different stories, no matter if it is for escape, education, entertainment, or just curiosity. Our readers have the option of books on CD, paperbacks, online audio and print books through Montana2Go, hardbacks, graphic novels, board books, and non-fiction referen...

Curiosity Untamed is moving from Thursdays to Mondays starting April 3rd. They are also changing their meeting time to 1 PM. This is a permanent change so more people will be able to join Diane Jensen as she leads the group in memory activities, new skills, and even Marco Polo adventures. This adult program helps with memory retention, memory skills, and more. If you would like to join the group, please call the Library at 287-3763. The Holocaust Project will meet on Thursday, March 30. The coordinators will meet at 5 PM to finalize plans for...
