    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 2, 2019

In a yearly tradition, the Montana East West Shrine Bowl rosters are announced at Midnight on Christmas. As has been the case in the recent years, Whitehall once again had a football player named to the prestigious squad. Senior Cade Briggs was selected to the West team as a cornerback. A four-year starter, Briggs finished his career with 108 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. "I'm extremely proud of Cade and his accomplishments as a Trojan football player....

  • Montana Legislators look to learn from past infrastructure failures

Timothy Pierce, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Jan 2, 2019

Republicans and Democrats agree funding critical infrastructure needs is important, but if the last two legislative sessions are any indication, that is where the agreement ends. Both times efforts to pass a major infrastructure investment bill failed. An infrastructure bonding bill will reappear, yet again, in the 2019 Montana legislative session. However, supporters are making some changes in hopes of winning support from the Republican-controlled legislature. "We need a bonding bill that's core, critical infrastructure," said Darryl James,...

PAUL HAMBY, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Jan 2, 2019

Montana's top prosecutor says he wants the 2019 Legislature to combat addiction to prescription opioids and expand on a policy of treatment rather than incarceration for drug offenders. Republican Attorney General Tim Fox said his office would suggest legislation requiring photo ID cards when picking up prescription painkillers, making the state's prescription drug registry mandatory and putting a five-day limit on prescriptions for opioids. "Opioid prescriptions are not monitored very well and people can get addicted very easily," Fox said....

With Christmas falling on a Tuesday in 2018, I really needed to be on top of things so that I could have the newspaper sent to the printer by early on Christmas Eve. On a normal week, I will usually have the pages ready to go by early Tuesday afternoon, but in order to spend time with family I needed to make sure they were done last week by early Monday morning. I knew to accomplish this I would have to spend my weekend working which is nothing out of the ordinary, so I woke up early Saturday morning to get a few hours in. Eight hours later I...

CAITLYN PATEL, Community News Service UM School of Journalism|Jan 2, 2019

Gov. Steve Bullock is once again proposing Montana launch a state-funded preschool program for those who cannot afford private pre-kindergarten programs for their children. The governor included a $30 million grant program to support high-quality preschool programs supplied by public schools, community-based providers or head start programs in his budget ahead of the 2019 legislative session. It is the governor's third attempt at state-funded preschool, but the first to benefit from the results of a pilot project in communities around the...

While it had been 12 days since their last game, there were no signs of rust Thursday night for the Whitehall High School girls basketball team. The Lady Trojans dominated the first quarter outscoring visiting Twin Bridges 24-5 on their way to a 65-25 victory to move to 7-0 on the season. Head Coach Kelly Nieskens was impressed with his squad's defense in the opening quarter as well as out of halftime when they outscored the Lady Falcons 21-1 in the third. "Our runs come with our big defensive...
