  • What Happened to Last Week's Ledger?

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 25, 2023

Did you think your paper was a bit off last week? Didn't know that page 1 is followed by 14, 13, 4, then 5? Did you get deja vu reading about the wrestling team? Well, due to a printing error last week, we all had a good laugh. What's the old saying: A man plans and God laughs. That was definitely last week. The best comment received on the paper was from Karen Ranta on Facebook: "I was happy, got 2 crosswords to do. The second one was easy, ha ha!" What did you miss? Thankfully, nothing major!...

  • Thought Provokers: 1/25/2023

    Jan 25, 2023

Making fun of short people is the last social taboo seen as acceptable. Murder is universally despised, and yet assassins are deemed cool. The actual reason children are a boundless fountain of energy is that they don’t have to use their brains constantly as adults do. A job interview feels like a conversation between two liars, both of which knows the other is lying. It’s important to keep your most hated pair of underwear so you know exactly when to do laundry without going commando. Flesh-eating zombies are a great example of equality bec...

  • Dear Editor: Ignorance is Bliss at COS

    JIM BUTERBAUGH|Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, Whether you are for or against the Convention of States (COS), please take a moment to read this and consider heavily what I have to say. I was at the Helena Capital building to absorb the words of others and testify against the COS. As I listened to those in support, I could feel the strength of their belief. They talked of budget requirements, term limits, and restricting the federal government. That sounds so compelling, doesn't it? The supporters stated that those who oppose...

  • Dear Editor: Freedom to Practice Religion Starts with You

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, I am by no means a lawless person, but neither am I one of those who say "there outta be a law." In the interest of peace and positivity, I'm not going to point fingers here, or name names; in essence, no religion or person, in particular, will be called onto the carpet! It should be noted, however, that not just in this town, but around the country, if one practices any religion but the prevailing religion of any given region/area (if indeed there is one), then that person, or...

  • Our Town 125 and 100 Years Ago - January Part II

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jan 25, 2023

JANUARY PART II As January moved toward February, politics, and science were clashing. In Boston, a woman was removed from the courtroom because the defense council said she might hypnotize the witnesses. The eminent Dr. Berman was summoned from Germany to St. Petersburg to help the Czar recover from severe vertigo. In Montana, the legislature was gearing up for a new session with Democrats in the majority, and overtures to bring members of the populist party to their side were not going well....

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 1/28/1998

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Jan 25, 2023

JANUARY 28, 1998 Whitehall school student academic test scores were higher than the Montana average and substantially higher than the national average. Test scores released from the Montana Office of Public Instruction showed Whitehall students consistently performed better than other U.S. and Montana students in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. The test scores were mandated by the law passed by the 1997 Montana State Legislature. The law required the Office of Public Instruction to gather state-wide information on test...

Playing against Boulder's Jefferson High on Friday, January 20 the men had a great showing, though were still defeated 58-43....

    Jan 25, 2023

The decision was made at the MHSA's annual meeting on Monday, January 16 in Missoula. The amendment comes after the MHSA voted Saturday to allow the Drummond and Philipsburg football co-op to remain intact. The organization had initially opted to dissolve the highly successful co-op, but...

KRISTA GLAUS and MARYBETH HUNTER, Whitehall School Nurses|Jan 25, 2023

HELP GETTING ALONG: Are you struggling as a family to “get along”? Do you think you have to have it all together all the time as a parent? What are some ways that you can make sure your child is resilient as they age? Mental health conditions can begin to develop in young children. Because they’re still learning how to identify and talk about thoughts and emotions, their most obvious symptoms are behavioral. Symptoms in children may include the following: ● Changes in school performance ● Excessive worry or anxiety, for instance fighting...

  • Jefferson County Commissioner Update: Cory Kirsch

    CORY KIRSCH, Jefferson County Commissioner|Jan 25, 2023

I wanted to take a moment to update everyone on some of what has been happening at the County lately. We are winding down the distribution of the $2.4 million we were allocated in American Rescue Plan Act money, most commonly referred to as ARPA money. We made our best effort to spread this money around the County to help folks recover from the adverse effects of the Covid pandemic. The County is working on applying for a Federal Access Grant to improve a deteriorating section of the Cataract Cr...

  • Challenge Your Happiness in 2023 - Part 3 Small Talk Has Big Benefits

    JANCEE DUNN, New York Times|Jan 25, 2023

Often on my daily neighborhood walk, I pass a woman and her dachshund, who used to bark at me frantically. I found it irritating. One day, on a whim, I decided to go beyond our customary nods. I asked her how I could make friends with her dog. "Oh, Petey gets upset when he sees people wearing hats," the woman said. "It's just too tiring to tell everyone." Because more people wear headgear in winter, she went on, it's a hard season for Petey. That was enough to make me fall in love with that...

  • New Tax Credits Increase Appeal of Heat Pumps for Homeowners

    Jan 25, 2023

More and more people are turning to heat pumps to heat and cool their homes. It is estimated that 18 million American households already use them. With new energy incentives being offered, and more homeowners choosing greener technologies, that number is expected to rise dramatically. What is a heat pump? Heat pumps are powered by electricity and transfer heat using refrigerant. Heat pump technology moves heat outside your home in warmer months and is able to pull heat into your home during cooler months. Here are three reasons to consider one...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Ginger Miso Chicken Soup

    Jan 25, 2023

Soups and stews are staples of winter. Such dishes might be hearty, but they often feature noodles, potatoes or other starches, which can be irritating for those with irritable bowel conditions or sensitivities to FODMAP ingredients. But that doesn't mean individuals with such sensitivities must avoid soup entirely. This recipe for Ginger Miso Chicken Soup from The Complete IBS Diet Plan (Rockridge Press) by Amanda Foote is filling even without the heavy carbohydrates. INGREDIENTS: Serves 4 1...

  • Creating Fiction From History: 1/25/2023

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Jan 25, 2023

You've come a long way, Baby! At the tender age of 13, not only was Carolina Duggard the first from her family to attend an institute of higher learning, she also might have been one of the youngest female graduates of St. Paul College, a public and community college in St. Paul, Minnesota. How did this little girl, whom we last saw at the tender age of 4, end up in St. Paul, Minnesota? Well, that's rather a long story; growing up as she did in little Whitehall, Montana, in the 20s and 30s,...
