  • Editorial: Meth: No stranger to small town America

    Jack H. Smith, Ledger Publisher|Jul 5, 2017

The past several issues of the Whitehall Ledger have included feature articles about the meth problem in the state of Montana. The series was written by students at the University of Montana School of Journalism, and paints a frightening picture of the nationwide epidemic. As a publisher, I felt it was important to run these articles to let residents learn a little bit more about the problem. Unfortunately, small town America is not immune to meth and it is a problem in Whitehall, Boulder, and every other town or city in Montana. What is...

  • Column: Wally World

    Jul 5, 2017

Earlier this week, citizens came together to celebrate the birthday of the United States of America. I had family in town and it was a great time with warm weather and a lot of food. I also had the chance to do something very American this week with a trip to Walmart. It doesn’t matter where you go in this great country, there is always going to be a Walmart somewhere near by. I lived in a place in Oregon that was about an hour away from the store, but that didn’t stop many people from making the trip on a regular occasion. I try the best I c...

  • For Your Information

    Arcylle Shaw, Contributing Writer|Jul 5, 2017

I have this little bar at the bottom of my computer that helps you find information. So, I asked for the words to “God Bless America”, by Irving Berlin. Wow! I had a wonderful time listening to myriads of patriotic music and eventually found the first time Berlin’s song was introduced to America. It was 1938 and sung by Kate Smith. The opening words “As the storm clouds gather, far across the sea”, were very appropriate as Hitler was gaining power in Europe. However, I wondered, How many of us when we sing the chorus, realize that it is a pray...

Nearly 50 games into their season, the Gallatin Valley Outlaws American Legion Post #87 team is starting to play some of their best baseball of the season. The team, which as of last week had a 12-6 conference record, has been sparked by their first two batters in the lineup -- the Whitehall based duo of Connor Johnson and Ryan Murphy. While they both excel at other sports, the two agree that baseball is their favorite, and both have played since they were four-years-old. The Outlaws are based...

  • Jail offers some addicts first chance at treatment

Rick Rowan, UM School of Journalism|Jul 5, 2017

Sheriff Don Bell worries about the state of Lake County's jail, which like many in Montana, is regularly filled to capacity. "My jail right now, everybody in there is on a felony charge. There's no minor, misdemeanor people in my jail, so it's really considered a max jail," said Bell. To put this in some perspective, county jails aren't meant to house felony offenders after they receive a sentence, that's the job of state prisons. In Sheriff Bell's 2016 annual report, the Lake County Jail proces...
