  • Protect Yourself From Wildfire Smoke

Pam Hanna RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Jul 28, 2021

One of the things I love most about Montana is its big, blue skies and fresh air. I have been looking forward to being outside and enjoying some summertime activities. Unfortunately, Montana is experiencing a very hot, dry summer. With the heat and drought have come wildfires. As they increase here and in surrounding states, we are experiencing an increase in wildfire smoke. As our skies turn from blue to gray, it is important to understand the risks associated with wildfire season and plan for...

  • What a Fun Weekend!

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jul 28, 2021

Yowzers! Was that a Frontier Days or what? I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in Whitehall! The restaurants were booming, the vendors were busy, the kids were out in full force and I saw a smile on most everyone’s face. It was a great weekend and I saw the community really come together to make it all happen. My only regret is that I don’t have two or three (or twelve) clones of myself so that I could be everywhere I wanted to be. It just wasn’t possible. And because of this I wasn’t able to get all of the moments captured that I had...

  • Dear Editor: Should Season Not Meant For Public Land

    Tom Puchlerz, Montana Wildlife Federation|Jul 28, 2021

Dear Editor, In Montana private land elk hunting is moving toward 11 weeks for people who can pay thousands of dollars for trophy bulls, while others are left to hunt cows in deep snows and bitter cold when they’re struggling to survive the winter. That’s the proposal of the Gianforte administration, one that extends “elk shoulder seasons” through Feb 15 annually, and onto your National Forest in 19 hunting districts. This proposal is ill conceived, premature and not in the interest of elk hunters, landowners and all Montanans who enjoy t...

  • Connecting Point: Sidetracked By Numbers

    Bill Lanes|Jul 28, 2021

Generosity goes beyond simply giving money; generosity permeates all areas of our lives. One area which we tend to forget in applying generosity is in our relationships, specifically forgiveness. Have you ever wrestled with an unforgiving attitude? If we are honest, we all fall short in this struggle. “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of the...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago

    Arlene Weber, Jefferson Valley Museum|Jul 28, 2021

The following is taken as written from late July 1895 editions of the Whitehall Zephyr. 19th Century Montana was different in many ways, yet today in some ways, we are not much different than back then. The papers had articles that editorialized the following: a distorted report of a mineral find in the Golden Valley 10 miles southwest of town; the new $1.00 tax on business as reported by the Yellowstone Journal which said in part, "One of the most aggravating features of the new license law is...

Elizabeth had spent these past few years dedicated to taking care of her father. She used to go out around town and socialize with all the women. She was content to take care...

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park will host a free talk entitled “Owl Pellet Investigation” on Friday, July 30, at 8 p.m. in the park’s campground amphitheater. What’s in that “poo?” While pellets aren’t actually scat, they do tell scientists what critters an owl has been munching on. Join Britney Gitch with the Montana Outdoor Science School to dissect an owl pellet and try to put the skeleton back together. This is the 10th presentation in Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park’s annual Friday Summer Speakers Series, which introduces a new speaker e...

  • Hands Off the Rocks - Leave Them Be!

MARJORIE SLIM WOODRUFF, Writers on the Range|Jul 28, 2021

Hikers are flooding our public lands, so I ask the question: Why can’t people just leave the poor rocks alone? They stack them into monoliths, paint them, write rude words on them. Who looks at a magnificent 350-million-year-old rock and thinks: “That rock needs a makeover!” First point: graffiti is deplorable. I do not want to see your name, your significant other’s name, an ode to your deceased wife (not making this up), or drawings of male genitalia. As for rock stacks, rock cairns were designed to guide the hiker along a sketchy trail....
