The fair and rodeo kicks off Thursday, August 24, and runs through Sunday, August 27, at the Jefferson County Recreation Park one-half mile south of Boulder. Ponies are the first feature out of the chute Friday. The Town of Whitehall is hosting a special public meeting Wednesday, August 23 with Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. The Whitehall Town Council voted last week to approve the meeting after local residents expressed concern about crime. Town Attorney Ed Guza said to Council last week he would also like the meeting set up with Doolittle to update their current contract. Local residents will be in for quite the performance Monday night when the Montana Shakespeare in the Parks program returns to Whitehall. Thanks to a generous donation from the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine, there is now power at the pavilion located at Legion Park in Downtown Whitehall. The mine donated $4,800 to pay for electrical work at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Pavilion that is owned by the Town of Whitehall. The Whitehall Council approved a request for the electrical work at a meeting July 16. Down McKeown Lane is a wonderful old house and out buildings that belong to Scott and Tracie Cornwall. Over the years, Tracie has put a foundation under the old house, done some landscaping and at present, Scott is in the process of refurbishing the barn. Tracie told me some time ago that her investigation of the property indicated that the house had actually had school held in part of it. Recently, Tracie turned 60 years old! Hi Folks, At last week’s regular meeting, we signed a contract with the First Boulder Valley Bank for them to provide banking services to the County. We approved Resolution 25-2017 which provides for a loan of about $300,000 from the Metal Mines Account to the South Tax Increment Financing District to cover some infrastructure needs. More than 50 years ago, five women heard a missionary from China speak at their church in California. That was Audrey Wetherall Johnson. These women asked her if she would lead them in a Bible Study. This Friday night the Whitehall/Harrison football team will look to start their season with a bang when they open on the road against Shepherd. Over a week into practice, head coach Dan Lacey is impressed with what he has seen from the 2017 Trojans squad. "Practice has been great. The boys are flying around and really competing. It's so far, so good for new Whitehall High School cheer coach Allissa Christensen. After a week of practice, Christensen said things have been going very well for the 2017 fall squad. There will be a new assistant coach on the sidelines for the 2017 Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. Brennan Hayes was hired over the summer to join the staff that includes head coach Dan Lacey and assistant Ed Simon. In an interview last week, Hayes who is a third grade teacher at Whitehall Elementary, said it was a honor to be hired for the position. The Whitehall High School volleyball team will open their 2017 season Saturday, August 26 at a tournament in Manhattan. The team will be under the direction of second-year head coach Lauren McDonald. Going into the season, McDonald said as far a running and the operations of the program she feels confident, but every new season is different. Whitehall High School junior volleyball player Dorothy Mastel is not short on experience on the court. Mastel was able to gain valuable varsity experience as a freshman, and was a starter during the 2016 season. Mastel said being able to play varsity her ninth grade season has given her a lot more experience than a lot of players, and she has definitely seen an improvement in her play the past two years. For the past two seasons, Whitehall's Max Feight was able to watch and learn from all-state quarterback and 2017 graduate Braden Larsen. It is now time for the rising junior Feight to shine. Feight praised Larsen for his leadership and teaching him about playing quarterback in a complex Whitehall system. After a week of practice for the Whitehall High School Cross Country team, long time head coach Kerry Sacry is happy with what he's seen for the 2017 squad. During the fall of 2016, Ryan Murphy, Adrian Bright, and Madison Loomis competed their first seasons as members of the Whitehall High School Cross Country team. With a year of experience, all three said they are comfortable in their second year with the program.
