The Whitehall High School Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its third class, the Class of 2018, in the spring of next year. This year’s class features athletic director, Dan Reum, who served for more than 25 years from the 1970s through 1990s. This class will also induct long-time contributor Dr. Gayle Sacry. Two teams are highlighted in this class; the 1978-79 State 3rd place Wrestling team, and the 1990 Boys Basketball State Runner-up team. A true gem of downtown Whitehall, the Star Theater has been an integral part of the community for decades. Starting this Friday the theater will be thanking its loyal base of customers with a free admission movie. The theater is also hosting a free of charge concert September 23. In October of 2016, the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation awarded five grants at a reception at the Borden's Building in Whitehall. Last week, JVCF board members were able to see the grants put to good use at a walk-through tour. The JVCF awarded five grants in 2016 for a total of $13,500. Throughout the tour, grant recipients thanked the board for their donations. If any of you followed the state legislature this past Spring you would have read about proposals to cut state spending and funding for our schools. They did restore millions of dollars in funding for Montana schools that were originally on the chopping block but they did so by depleting a different pool of school payments. School Block Grant funding and Natural Resource payments have been diminished and the burden has been pushed to local taxpayers to make up the difference, and neither the taxpayer or our local school districts have any say.... Officials at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine are pleased with the current progress of underground operations at the site. At the Community Transition Advisory Meeting last week, Mine General Manager Dan Banghart reported the production in August was 3,300 ounces, they have already completed a four-day mill run in September -- with an eight-day run scheduled this week. “The underground continues to do quite well,” Banghart said. After two away games to start the 2017 season, the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team was able to open their home season earlier this month against Red Lodge. While the game had the importance of the home fans getting their first chance to see the Trojans play in Whitehall, it also was of extreme significance because it was the first game at Trojans Field with the new bleachers. While I was attending the University of Wyoming, I was waiting tables to help pay for school and expenses, and it was getting really old. While it certainly not the worst job I’ve had, my nerves were getting fried by people who were downright mean, would come in three minutes before closing, or would try to do everything they could to get a free meal. With the first case of influenza confirmed in Jefferson County last week and several others in 5 other Montana counties, it looks like the 2017-18 flu season has begun. Last Friday, the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) announced that 14 laboratory-confirmed influenza infections were reported across the state, with 3 of them hospitalized. The Whitehall High School varsity volleyball team will look to pick up their first conference win this weekend against rival Jefferson High School. The Lady Trojans were on the road Tuesday night in Big Timber. They will host their rival Saturday, September 23, with junior varsity action starting at 5 p.m. Whitehall fell on the road last night at Big Timber. After having their last two meets cancelled, the Whitehall High School Cross Country team will be back in action Saturday at a meet in Butte. The Trojans once again had to wait another week to compete after their meet last Saturday in Anaconda was cancelled due to snow conditions. The team had hoped to make up the Anaconda meet Monday, but it was unfortunately also cancelled. It was a cold, windy, rainy and muddy night September 15 at Trojans Field. While the conditions may not have been ideal for a Whitehall/Harrison offense that had averaged 41 points in their first three games, it was a perfect opportunity for the Trojans defense to once again show they are one of the elite defensive units in Montana. Hi Folks, Interesting change of weather this past week. There wasn’t much easing into the change. It went from the 90’s to the 40’s in about three days. This should go a long way toward ending our fire season for this year, especially since we have more rain and snow forecasted for the next few days. An enthusiastic group met to get the Cardwell 100th Anniversary celebration plans started. The Cardwell School has been reserved for August 4, 2018 to commemorate this milestone. With the date secured, the work finding former students and getting other arrangements made, will be the big push. Other volunteers are welcome to join the work. The Cardwell School Board considered policies and budgets during the regular meeting. The FAA and Montana Highway Patrol are investigating a plane accident Thursday afternoon in Whitehall. According to Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle, a plane was apparently taxiing on the runway when it got away from the pilot and ran into a house at 36 S. Centurion Way.
