Cyclists descend upon Whitehall

The population of Whitehall grew by leaps and bounds for a night last week.

Early Tuesday afternoon, an estimated 400 visitors made their way into town as part of the 2016 Cycle Greater Yellowstone Tour.

According to Site Coordinator Rob Dubac, 300 to 310 cyclists, 70 volunteers, and 30 vendors were in Whitehall as part of the 511-mile tour.

Dubac said the tour travels through different communities for seven days, all in the the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Great Yellowstone Coalition runs the tour, and provides camping space, three meals per day, food and hydration at rest stops, mechanical support, evening entertainment, showers and baggage transfer to each camp.

Those involved with the tour were being hosted by the Whitehall School District.

Superintendent John Sullivan said they were approached by the tour late last year, and decided to let them stay on school grounds. Sullivan said he hopes the event would generate business in town.

"I think it's good for the community," he said.

Sullivan added tour officials had to provide insurance before staying on school grounds.
