Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Cross Country starts Saturday

The Whitehall High School Cross Country will enter the 2016 season with a wealth of returning talent.

When the team opens the season Saturday at a meet at Jefferson High School in Boulder, they will do so with the talented returning trio of Hunter Flynn, Ann Russell, and Justin Gipson.

Flynn will enter his senior season and one of the top runners is Montana Class B. Flynn was all-state last season after finishing fifth at the State Meet in Great Falls. He finished 11th at state as both a freshman and sophomore. Head Coach Kerry Sacry praised Flynn for all his hard work over the past three seasons.

Sacry said both Gipson and Russell are really good runners. Sacry added freshman Madison Loomis would also be a good runner for the 2016 team.

Sacry expects the team to do well Saturday, but added that it will also be a feeling out process for the team.

He said it's good to be back and the members of the team and both excited and ready to compete.

"Cross Country is such a great sport," he said.

As an added bonus to the upcoming season, the team will be hosting a meet September 3 at 10 a.m.

"The kids are really excited about it," he said.

Sacry added there could be eight to 12 teams at the Whitehall meet.

Following the opener in Boulder, the Trojans will compete Aug. 30 at the Butte Central Meet at Fairmont.

The 2016 schedule also includes meets at Harrison (Pony), Manhattan, Missoula, Butte, Helena and Townsend.
