Vandals strike at Fish Pond

Over the years members of the Whitehall Rotary Club have worked countless hours making the Fish Pond on Legion Avenue a beautiful setting for both locals and visitors. Earlier this month, a person or persons had complete disregard for the clubs efforts.

According to Whitehall Rotary Club President Ed Handl, the fish food dispenser that had been placed at the pond was vandalized sometime between September 2 and September 5. Handl said the dispenser that had been mounted on a steal platform, had either been hit with an object or kicked. Handl said the money from the tray inside the dispenser was taken and parts of the dispenser were throwninto the pond. Because the tray had been emptied earlier in the week, Handl said those responsible probably only walked away with $2 or $3.

"It's a disappointing situation. We just put it in this year," Handl said.

While vandalism is something the club has had to deal with in the past at the pond, Handl said it is unfortunate because they are just trying to work hard to improve the community.

At this point, Handl is unsure if he will be able to fix the dispenser or if it will have to be replaced.

"It will be back next year. This won't deter us," he said.

Handl encouraged local residents with more information about the crime to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
