Trojans headed to quarterfinals

Whitehall football preps for road battle

And then there were eight.

After a dramatic 17-14 overtime victory on the road last Saturday against Cut Bank, the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the MHSA Class B Playoffs. The Trojans (9-1) will next play Saturday on the road against Ronan (6-4). The Chiefs, the second seeded team for the 6B Division, will be coming into the game fresh off a 43-29 road victory over Columbus.

Whitehall head coach Dan Lacey said on offense, Ronan is a lot like his 2016 Trojan team.

"They like to utilize 1 on 1 match ups in the passing game to help open up the running game. We need to have a great performance by our defensive backs and a steady pass rush with our defensive line to be successful against Ronan," he said.

When Whitehall has the ball, Lacey said the key will be to control what they can control.

"We need to take what they give us on offense and take our shots down field when they give us the match-up we like. We have numerous weapons on the offensive side of the ball so if they take away some of them we need others to step up and make the plays they are capable of and the plays they have made all year. We just have to remember to control what we can control and we should be in for a great football game," he said.

The game will mark the second time this season Whitehall has played on a turf field.

"Playing on the turf field prior to this game is huge for us. It gives our kids an idea of what the field is going to be like and how cutting and planting is different. Our kids really enjoyed that experience and we are looking forward to playing at another great facility again," Lacey said.

The game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
