On November 11, 1918 at 11:00 a.m. World War I Allied Supreme Commander Ferdinand Foch met with the German delegation to sign the armistice aboard his railway carriage near Compiegne, France. Although many people think of this event as the end of the First World War, it was initially a 30 day cease-fire agreement which was continually renewed until the formal signing of the peace treaty a year later.
