Between the Stacks

I hope you are all staying warm this snowy season. If you are in need of something fun to read, the Library just received another shipment of new books and movies.

The collection is now all caught up on several series, including Anne Perry’s detective stories, the Maisie Dobbs mysteries, and a variety of independent books.

For young fantasy fans, there are all six volumes of the “Knights of Arrethtrae” series by Chuck Black and the first volume of John Flanagan’s Ranger Apprentice (The Early Years) series entitled “The Battle of Hackham Heath”. Maggie Stiefvater fans will be happy to know we now have a complete set of the Raven King series in the young adult section.

We are taking a few weeks off to get ready for January programming. Don’t forget that there is no story time the week of December 28th. The Library will be closed from December 24-26 and December 31-January 2. Regular hours and programs will resume on January 3.

The History Book Club is reading “The Rival Queens: Catherine de’ Medici, her Daughter Marguerite de Valois, and the Betrayal that Ignited a Kingdom” by Nancy Goldstone for January.

Talk about a different perspective on family dynamics! The next meeting will be January 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library basement. If you enjoy different eras of world and American history then this is the group for you.

It is always fun to spend money and just finished giving the parameters of the new computers to Dell. The computer classes will begin in January with six brand new laptops from a generous grant from the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation.

It has been an interesting couple of weeks deciding which features and programs to put on the laptops while staying within the budget. I chose to purchase the laptops for the classes because they are such a popular home purchase for those taking the classes. They are also the easiest to transport around the library for different educational purposes. I was reading about several larger libraries who are now using tablets to walk around the stacks and answer patron questions about reserves, overdue materials, general information, and reference questions. What a great idea!

Last but not least I want to give a warm thank you to all of the patrons who have showered the staff with goodies. We appreciate all of the support our patrons give to the Library, the Library Board, and the staff. However, we may all have to join the Tai Chi ladies on Mondays to work some of the sugar off.
