Temperatures drop, games cancelled

A fierce Arctic storm descended into Whitehall last week and its effects were still being felt days later.

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Whitehall dropped to -24 on the morning of December 17. AccuWeather.com reported the low on December 17 in Whitehall at -37.

The storm that brought with it large amounts of snow and gusty winds caused road closures across the state and the cancellation of numerous high school sporting events.

The Whitehall High School boys and girls basketball teams games Saturday, December 17 in Boulder were cancelled the previous day by Jefferson High School officials because of weather conditions. The Trojans home games Monday, December 19 against Big Timber were also postponed after school was cancelled in Big Timber on Monday and the closure of Interstate 90 from Park City to Livingston.

Whitehall Athletic Director Dan Lacey said Monday that both games would be made up in January after the Christmas break.

The lingering effects of the storm carried over to Monday morning. Whitehall Superintendent of Schools John Sullivan said they were informed Monday morning by Harlow's Bus Service that they might not be able to pick up kids at several routes due to blowing and drifting snow. Sullivan said they were eventually unable to make it to two pickup spots.
