Lady Trojans fight to the end against talented Three Forks

While the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team was unable to pickup a win last Friday night against Three Forks, they sent a loud and clear message they are a team to lookout for in league play.

A second half comeback by the Lady Trojans put them in a position to win, but they ultimately fell short in the 42-35 home loss.

Whitehall fell behind 16-10 at the end of the first, and trailed 26-14 at halftime. They would bounce back strong in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Wolves 16 to 9 to cut the lead to 35-30.

"We were proud of their effort, being behind and fighting back shows a lot of character in the Trojans," head coach Herman Gerving said.

Whitehall was led in scoring by Kaya Welch with 14 points. Freshman Isabel Evans added seven, Bryn Welker had five, Mesquite Melton and Dorothy Mastel both had four points, and Ann Russell finished with two points.

Gerving said the game showed that Whitehall could compete with the better teams in the conference.

The teams December 17 game against Boulder and Dec. 19 game against Big Timber were postponed due to weather.

Whitehall will next play January 3 when they host Twin Bridges.

Gerving said the Lady Trojans need to continue to improve with their defense, free throws, and offensive execution.

JUNIOR VARSITY

In junior varsity action, the Lady Trojans dropped at 43-21 contest to Three Forks.

Freshman Asha Noyes led Whitehall in scoring with 14 points. Monica Sepulveda had three, Kari Ellison and Allee Scafani each had two and Danielle Hays added one point.

Editor's Note: In last week's issue, Isabel Evans was listed as a senior. She is a freshman on the 2016-17 team.
