Lady Trojans fall to Twin Bridges

The Whitehall High School girl's basketball team started strong, but was unable to hold off a talented Twin Bridges team in a 56-33 loss Tuesday night in Varsity Gym.

The Lady Trojans led by as many as seven early in the second quarter, but a hot shooting Lady Falcons team dominated the final three quarters on their way to the convincing victory.

Whitehall head coach Herman Gerving said the team started off well especially on defense, but they started to make some mistakes with the ball and Twin Bridges really shot well in the second half.

It was a positive early on for the Lady Trojans who were led in a low scoring opening quarter by Bryn Welker. The senior guard had two three pointers in the first to help Whitehall to a 10-6 lead.

Senior Kaya Welch would put the Lady Trojans up 13-6 with a three of her own to open the second quarter, but after that the first half belonged to the visiting Lady Falcons, who capitalized on several Whitehall turnovers to score 14 straight points to take 20-14 lead. A Welker free throw would end the drought, but Twin Bridges would answer right back, this time scoring seven straight to increase the advantage to 27-14. Freshman standout Isabel Evans would score the last four points of the half to cut the lead to single figures, 27-18.

The Lady Trojans were unable to pull any closer in the third quarter, and were outscored 14-4 by the Lady Falcons who took a 41-22 lead into the final quarter. Sophomore Dorothy Mastel scored all four of the Whitehall points in the third at the foul line.

Evans was tremendous in the post for Whitehall in the final quarter. She had eight points in the fourth, to finish with a team high 12. Welker had seven, Mastel finished with six, Welch had five and Monica Sepulveda added two points.

The Lady Trojans will next play Thursday when they host Manhattan. Gerving said the team needs to play more aggressive on defense and wants more court awareness.

"They were frustrated," Gerving said following the game. "They will be ready to go Thursday."
