Editorial: Lady Trojans show plenty of promise

It would be safe to say the past few years have been difficult for the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team. As soon as the team took to the court to open the 2016-17 season, this changed in a heartbeat.

The Lady Trojans were able to open the season with three consecutive victories, already matching their win total for the previous two seasons combined. They dropped their next two games, but showed last Thursday that the culture of Whitehall girl's basketball had changed. They shook off the two losses and came out and destroyed Manhattan. They lost a game last night in a tough road environment, but they will bounce back.

Even though things were not going their way last season, the team never quit and fought hard every single night. This carried over to the 2016-17 team who is scrappy, plays with heart, and is starting to gain confidence. This could be a very dangerous team by the end of the season. They work so hard and deserve success.

The team has some key-returning players, but also has a great deal of youth who have set the Lady Trojans up for a bright future. You can't always measure the true worth of a team through wins and losses, but it's nice to see the seniors on the team finally get a few victories and the added confidence each victory brings. They have worked hard for four years and it's nice to see them smiling on the court.

If you haven't been to see them play, I would encourage you to get out and watch the girl's play. The boy's team is once again a very good squad and so are the wrestlers, but the girl's are fun to watch too and will only get better.

Of course the end goal of any team is to win a championship, but coaches also want to see a team that does things the right way. So keep up the good work Bryn, Kaya, Mesquite, Rachel, Asha, Isabel, Allee, Dorothy, Monica, Ann, Danielle, Britney, Ashlynn, Maggie, Coach Gerving and Coach Neil. This team does things the right way, and if you haven't seen them play, please make a trip to do so.
