Lady Trojans take down Manhattan

After opening the season with three consecutive wins, the Whitehall High School girl's basketball team hit a rough patch with back-to-back losses against Three Forks and Twin Bridges. The team responded in impressive fashion last Thursday night with an impressive 57-29 home league win over Manhattan.

"The Lady Trojans came back and played really hard against Manhattan, which is a characteristic of these Lady Trojans. Knock them down and they will get up," head coach Herman Gerving said.

The second year coach said he was pleased with way his squad opened the game, and this resulted in a big early lead.

"They (Manhattan) are a young team and the aggressive start put them on their heels," he said.

Sophomore Dorothy Mastel led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Kaya Welch and Mesquite Melton had nine each, and Isabel Evans had eight. Monica Sepulveda and Ann Russell each finished with five points, and Rachel Smith and Asha Noyes both had four points.

With a busy week ahead with games scheduled Thursday at Anaconda and Friday at Missoula Loyola, Gerving said the squad will be working on defense and team work.

"The games are all away games so keeping focused will be a main concern,' he said.
