Lady Trojans seek balance

The Whitehall High School girl's basketball team will look to get things rolling offensively this week in road matchups against 5B rivals Sweet Grass County and Three Forks.

The Lady Trojans were impressive on defense in home action last week, but were unable to pickup a victory in the three game home stand. They fell 36-33 to Big Timber, 39-34 to Anaconda, and 33-23 to rival Jefferson.

Head coach Herman Gerving said the team's perimeter shooting has not come along as he expected it to, but once it starts falling they should improve offensively, and hopefully they can carry it through to the 5B District Tournament in mid February.

Gerving said the team has played good on defense, but they still need to get to some shooters faster and rebound better.

For 30 minutes last Thursday night it appeared the Lady Trojans would walk away with the victory against Anaconda. They led by five at halftime, and kept the five-point leading going into the final quarter. Whitehall would have the lead as late as three minutes left in the game, but a furious fourth quarter full court press doomed the Lady Trojans who were outscored 16-7 in the final period.

Isabel Evans led the way with 12 points. Bryn Welker had eight, Mesquite Melton finished with six, Dorothy Mastel had five, Rachel Smith had two points and Ann Russell added one point.

In the game against Big Timber, Evans and Mastel each finished with 11 points.

Whitehall will play Sweet Grass Friday and Three Forks Saturday.
