Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Safety paramount at Golden Sunlight

At the Community Transition Advisory Committee Meeting last Thursday, Whitehall resident Ed Handl lauded Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine officials for their commitment to safety.

Following the monthly safety report from Mine General Manager Dan Banghart, Handl said Barrick has done an excellent job with safety and their record is very admirable. Handl said the State of Montana could use the local mine as an example for safety.

In his report, Banghart said there were no reportable incidents in November at the mine and they are around 140 days without an incident.

Banghart discussed Barrick’s “Courage to Care” program and how it affects safety at the mine. According to Barrick, the “Courage to Care” initiative has the goal to achieve zero incidents at their sites, “and is about building an independent culture were we all foster good relationships and care for others to make the right decision at all levels.”

Banghart reported production in November was 3,450 ounces, which exceeded both their budget and forecast for the month, adding underground operations exceeded plans and they are starting to see a better grade of ore. He was also pleased with the performance of the mill during the month.

In his report, Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus discussed the planned Apex Project at the site, stating he is confident they have turned in the final response to the state. Buus added the next step would be completing an Environmental Assessment.
