Lady Trojans hosting two games

With two home games scheduled this week, the Whitehall High School girls basketball team is continuing to work hard to reach their goals for the season.

The Lady Trojans will host Townsend Thursday at 6:00, and will play the late game Saturday night against Missoula-Loyola.

In road action last week, the Lady Trojans fell Thursday 57-33 to Manhattan, and 54-19 Saturday at Twin Bridges.

Head coach Kelly Nieskens said the team is starting to embrace the idea of constant pressure.

"We showed that by being able to break the Twins Bridges press. We were also able to gain confidence in areas we struggled with at the start of the year," Nieskens said.

In the game against the Falcons, Nieskens said the team really came to play in the first half.

"We came out aggressive and tried a couple new things. We put ourselves in a position to compete. The second half we got tired and it showed in our field goal percentage. Defensively we just didn't have the same energy and it hurt us. We are not in shape, that is the next goal we will achieve. I push these girls hard, they respond by playing hard. As a coach that makes you excited. We still have time to keep improving as a team to reach our goal," he said.

In last week's game against Manhattan, Whitehall was behind just 17-12 at the end of the first quarter before foul trouble sent Dorothy Mastel and Allee Scafani to the bench.

Nieskens said foul trouble changes everything, and really does determine how you continue to play.

"It also alters the game plan, we wanted to come out aggressive in a man to man defense, which we haven't been able to do yet this season. It's a goal we really want to achieve, foul trouble partially took that away, he said.

Whitehall was led in scoring by Asha Noyes who had a game high 15 points.

Scafani was also in double figures with 10, and Mastel added six.

With the two homes games this week, Nieskens said the team has got to start putting the ball in the hole.

"Our offense is getting more aggressive and we are getting good looks. The plan this week is to keeping trying to improve our footwork and how we close out defensively. We need to protect the paint. We will keep fighting to get better," he said.
