Trojans bounce back with lopsided road victory

Two nights after a tough 50-46 road loss at Manhattan, the Whitehall High School boys basketball team bounced back in impressive fashion with a 59-33 road victory over Twin Bridges.

Trojans (5-3, 1-2 5B) head coach Zach McLean said his team played really well in the Saturday win over the Falcons.

"It was great to see that kind of response. Those type of games show what type of character your team has," he said. "Defensively we were locked in. I thought our help side rotation was the best is has been all season. We fronted the post well and rotated well."

Whitehall took at 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, and were up 25-18 at halftime. The Tigers would outscore the Trojans 12-6 in the third quarter, and 20-15 in the fourth to take a four-point victory.

McLean credited Manhattan for playing well down the stretch.

"We did a poor job handling their zone. And when we needed to generate a stop or get a rebound, we didn't do that. Also shooting below 50 percent from the free throw line will come back to haunt you in a tight game. These tight games will only make us a better down the stretch," McLean said.

The Trojans were lead in scoring by Max Feight with 21 points. Wyatt Alexander had nine, and Ryan Murphy added eight points.

Whitehall will host two games this week, the first Thursday night against conference foe Townsend. The varsity boys team will play the late game in the doubleheader. The Trojans will host Missoula-Loyola Friday with the game scheduled for 6 p.m.

McLean said a focus this week would be stopping the drive defensively.

"Both teams like to run some dribble drive offense," he said. "Offensively, I have felt our man stuff has been pretty good as of late. We have seen more zone the last two games, and we have to tighten some things up there."
