Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
With their first competition a little over a week away, Whitehall High School tennis coach Kerry Sacry is optimistic about the 2018 season.
The Lady Trojans will return three talented seniors as well as a strong group of returning underclassmen.
Seniors Amber Murrish, Evelin Dove, and Kyeli Ostler will be joined by returning players Dorothy Mastel, Britney Welker, Bailee Hess, Alicia Konold and Kaya Smith.
Welker in singles and the doubles team of Dove and Murrish were each one win away from the state tournament in 2017.
Sacry said the conference graduated a lot of talented players especially in singles, so this is a really good chance for the team to qualify several members for the season ending tournament.
The Trojans will also welcome two new players to the team this year with the addition of Macee Patritti and Madison Homer. Sacry expects his older players to help lead the newcomers, and have already done this when they started a practice himself and third-year assistant Malcolm Neal had to stay late for a meeting.
The team is tentatively scheduled to open their season April 5 at Townsend. Other upcoming competitions include March 10 at Livingston, and March 12 in Boulder. The team will host Three Forks, Boulder, and Big Sky on May 3.
Looking towards the season, Sacry said he is surprised more kids don't come out to play tennis because everyone who does really seems to love it.
"It's a great sport," he said.
The longtime coach added tennis is also fun for the kids because they are matched up against players of similar skill levels.
