New cabins in Silver Star offer breathtaking views

Those traveling on MT Highway 41 through Silver Star may have noticed the recent addition of three beautiful log sided cabins near the Jefferson River. With breathtaking views of the Tobacco Root and Highland Mountains, two of the cabins are now available for rent.

The RiverRest Cabin Rentals officially opened for business in May and are owned by John and Debbie Lumsden, who live in the third cabin. Along with the amazing views, the cabins offer private access to the Jefferson River for fishing and to view wildlife. Each of the cabins has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with a full/twin bunk. There is a full bathroom and the living room features an "L" Shaped coach. The kitchen features a fridge, stovetop, dishwasher, dishes and a toaster over. The cabins are available year-round and also feature radiant heat and an electric fireplace.

Born in Butte and raised in Whitehall, Debbie is very familiar with the location. After meeting John in Phoenix, the two would later marry and spent a lot of time visiting the Whitehall area including Debbie's Uncle, who owned the country store in Silver Star.

The two decided they would like to find a property to buy locally and could not believe the views from their current location, which they described as the perfect setting. John was born in Scotland and spent time traveling through Europe seeing many beautiful views along the way. Standing near one of the cabins, he said looking at the Tobacco Roots reminds him of the Alps in Switzerland, and looking in the opposite direction towards the Highlands reminds him of Ben Nevis, the largest mountain in his native country.

"The view of the Tobacco Roots are unbelievable," Debbie said.

After aquiring the land, they found out it could be a commercial property, and looked into the idea of cabins.

For John, the idea of building and renting cabins was not far fetched. His mother ran a bed and breakfast in Scotland, and he had once built cabins in Canada.

"It's kind of in my DNA," he said.

John designed the three cabins and work officially began in October, although he admits it was a difficult journey with a lot of snow last winter. They were both appreciative of all the family and friends who helped them, along with Joe Davis, and Elk Ridge Building.

In their first month of business, John and Debbie have been blown away with the feedback from customers that have included many five star reviews.

"It has been phenomenal," she said.

Along with those who want to fish and see wildlife like moose, deer, cranes, and eagles, Debbie said the property is also a great location for those who are visiting family, or in town for a wedding or event. They also encourage hunters to take advantage of staying at the property.

"Everyone is welcome," John said.
