While his squad may be young as far as varsity experience, longtime Whitehall High School boys basketball coach Zach McLean has been impressed with the effort of his team in anticipation of Saturday's opener at home against Manhattan Christian.
"I really like our attitude and our attention to detail early. These guys have really come to work every day to get better," McLean said.
The lone returning starter for Whitehall is senior Cade Briggs, who McLean said will be very important to the 2018-19 team.
"First of all, he is a great young man. He is someone that all of us can trust and look up to. He will need to bring more of a scoring punch for us this year," McLean said.
In the post, McLean is excited to have senior Clay Wolfe who he said will give the team a wrinkle they haven't had in a while.
"He's got good size and has great feet in the post. We will lean on him heavily this year," McLean said.
On defense, McLean added senor Clint parks will bring the energy the team needs, and he plays his role and is really coachable.
With an inexperienced team, McLean knows the team will need some of the younger guys to contribute early and often.
McLean said sophomore Dylan Smith brings them a physical post presence, sophomore Hayden Hoagland has really worked hard over the summer and they need his length, freshman Brendan Wagner had a good summer and we will need his shooting and ball handling, and sophomores Flint Smith and Kenzi Hugelet as well have really improved.
Looking towards the opener, McLean is aware they are play a team that is a state championship caliber squad.
"They have some shooters that can really spread you out. They are long and athletic and want to play an up-tempo style of game. Caleb Bellach is a NCAA Division 1 player and we will have our hands full with them. We want to control tempo and really make this game a half-court game. We have to win the rebounding margin and take care of the ball," McLean said.
The varsity girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
