Great weekend for Whitehall wrestling

The Whitehall High School wrestling team once again showed last week they are among the top teams in Class B with a fourth place finish at the Choteau Classic.

Led by first place finisher Connor Johnson, the Trojans finished the two-day tournament with 115 points, finishing behind Poplar (149) Columbus (137) and Townsend (123.5).

Assistant Coach Steve Sacry said it was another good weekend of wrestling for the team.

"The Choteau Tournament is a good opportunity to compete with some of the top B-C wrestlers in the state. With 41 teams represented, I was pleased with our fourth place finish. Wrestlers are focusing their technique and there were some excellent matches this weekend," he said.

Johnson went 4-0 on the weekend at 138 pounds. He picked up a win by fall over Dalton Byrd of Townsend, a 7-0 win over Ty Curry of Valier, and a 16-9 major decision win over Kolter Schipman in the semifinals. He won the championship match by fall over Logan Boadle of Poplar.

"Connor Johnson dominated his opponents, which included two state ranked wrestlers to place first in his weight class," Sacry said.

Sophomore Trentin Walker went 4-1 at 126 pounds and finished in second place. He picked up a win by fall over Ethan Liddle of Chinook, an 11-2 major decision over Porter Blanchard of Manhattan, a win by fall over Sam Lane of Townsend, and a win by fall over Eric Lufkin of Boulder. Sacry said Walker had a great weekend, and showed great improvement and determination making it to the championship match.

Sophomore Dawson Powers went 4-1 and finished in third place at 113 pounds. He picked up a win by fall over Hunter Kennedy of Cut Bank, a win by fall over Caleb Simpson of Cut Bank, a 6-2 decision victory over Lily Grismer of Cascade and a win by fall over Brady Ellison of Columbus. Sacry said Powers lost his first match to Ellison but got revenge to place third.

Gaten Wassberg went 3-2 for Whitehall and finished in fourth at 170 pounds. He won twice by technical fall over Will Lane of Townsend, and also by fall over Troy Matt of St. Ignatius. Sacry said Wassberg continues to wrestle well and while the Whitehall coaches are pleased with his efforts, he is also impressing coaches from other towns.

Dallen Hoover went 4-3 over the weekend and finished in sixth place at 152 pounds. He won by fall over Kaleb Neubauer of Poplar, Isaac DuMontier of St. Ignatius, and Skyler Titsworth of Arlee. He also won by decision over Cyrus Richardson of Manhattan. Sacry said Hoover moved up a class and it didn't slow him down a bit.

Alleck Holloway picked up three wins for Whitehall at 120 pounds. He won by fall over Danny Burisha of Wolf Point, earned a 6-1 decision over Michael Leach of Simms, and a win by fall over Morgan Ayers of Highwood.

Mike Wilkinson went 2-2 for Whitehall at 132 pounds. He won by fall over Alex Tooley of Great Falls and a 6-3 decision over Tabris Correa of Shelby.

Riley Forcella went 2-2 for the Trojans at 145 pounds. He won by fall over Tallon Hasen of Deer Lodge and also by fall against Bridger Gouchenour of Conrad.

Garrison Robertson picked up three wins at 160 pounds. He won by fall over Skye Smith of Cascade.

Also competing for the Trojans were Gage McMillan (1-3), Brody Becker (2-3), Jimmy Best (1-2) and Cody Best (0-2).

The team will next compete Friday and Saturday at the Great Falls Central Duals.
