Trojans finish first at Whitehall Duals

It was a phenomenal weekend for the Whitehall High School wrestling team.

The Trojans went a perfect 7-0 on their way to a first-place finish at the annual Whitehall Duals event.

"Once again, the wrestling team worked well as a team, supporting and encouraging each other to have a successful weekend," said Assistant Coach Steve Sacry. "I am very proud of the boys. It has been many many years since Whitehall has won this tournament in such a dominate fashion."

Whitehall opened the tournament in dominant fashion with a 66-12 win over the Helena Capital JV. Sacry said the team won every individual match wrestled, adding they didn't have wrestlers in two weight classes and had to forfeit those matches.

The Trojans continued to wrestle strong in their next three matches Friday with a 54-6 win over Billing Skyview JV, 53-22 over divisional foe Anaconda and 66-12 win over the Bozeman junior varsity.

In bracketed action Saturday, the Trojans advanced to the finals with a 42-26 win over a tough Fremont, ID team, and a 57-18 victory over the Billings West JV team.

The Trojans and Townsend would both go into finals with 6-0 record and Whitehall would take the title with a 48-24 win.

"Competing against Townsend is always thrilling. They are well-coached and have good wrestlers. The crowd threw their encouragement into the contest, at times to deafening decibels," Sacry said.

Looking back on the tremendous weekend, Sacry said he was impressed with the leadership of captains Mike Wilkinson, Gaten Wassberg, Riley Forcella and Dallen Hoover who between them had 23 victories.

Sacry was also appreciative to the community for their help with the tournament.

"I want to give a special thanks to the parents and community members that helped to put this tournament on. It takes a ton of work to give the kids this kind of opportunity. Thank you all for your help," he said.

This Saturday the Trojans will travel to Great Falls where the varsity team will compete at the CMR Holiday Classic and the JV will wrestle at Great Falls High.
