Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Construction underway on MDT Whitetail Road Project

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has begun construction on roadway improvements on 10.3 miles of Whitetail Road (S-399) in Jefferson County between Boulder and Whitehall. The project will increase safety and reduce the amount of maintenance necessary for Jefferson County by improving the roadway surface and drainage. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2020.

The project is divided into two segments. The first segment of the project starts near

Antelope Lane and extends north on the gravel surface ending approximately a half mile beyond the National Forest boundary. Improvements include raising and rebuilding the gravel road, improving ditch drainage, installing culverts, and reducing sharp curves.

The second segment of the project starts at the intersection of Whitetail and Hot Springs roads and continues north to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Improvements include repaving the roadway and installing a large culvert at the Little Boulder River crossing.

During construction, traffic on Whitetail Road will be reduced to one lane and controlled with pilot cars, traffic signals or flaggers through work zones. Motorists should expect up to 15-minute delays during the day.

MDT will continue to notify the public of anticipated construction scheduling and impacts

The Montana Department of Transportation, Montana Contractor's Association and our construction partners are taking the COVID-19 pandemic very seriously. MDT has implemented several measures to help keep employees, contractors and the public safe during the construction season. MDT will continue to follow state and federal guidelines and apply safe practices.
