Public Safety Levy denied

A majority of Town of Whitehall residents voted last week against a public safety mill levy.

The unofficial total vote count was 307 against and 260 for the levy that would have generated funding for the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department and the town contract with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. This was the first time the town had asked for a general mill levy increase since the 1970s.

In Jefferson County, 82 percent (8,247 or 9,466) of registered voters participated in the general election. In Madison County, the number was 86 percent (6,159 over 7,111).

In Senate District 36, incumbent Republican Jeff Welborn defeated Libertarian Challenger John Lamb 10,520 to 2,705.

In the closest local race of 2020 in Senate District 38, Incumbent Democrat Edie McClafferty defeated Republican Challenger Jim Buterbaugh by a vote of 6,640 to 6,586. Jefferson County Election Administrator Bonnie Ramey said Monday they had not been notified by the Secretary of State about a recount in the race.

In House District 71, Republican Kenneth M. Walsh defeated Democrat Ian Root by a vote of 5,648 to 1,943.

In House District 76, Republican Marta Bertoglio defeated Democrat Bryher Herak by a vote of 4,729 to 2,187.

In the non-partisan race for Jefferson County Superintendent of Schools, Sara Eyer defeated Deborah Jacobsen by a vote of 3,645 to 2,891.

Jefferson County voters approved to retain Jefferson County Justice Court Jude Steve Andersen by a vote of 6,552 to 684.
