Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Our Town 100 Years Ago: Dec. 1920 Part 2

(Please note a correction for December 1920, Part 1. Mr. Black's first name is Tanjor, not Tannor.)

Another year is wrapping up. Kids are playing sports, people are getting married, organizations are selecting officers for the coming year. There are three marriages of interest to locals. Guy D. George from Butte has married Lucile Renaldo of Laurin. Mr. George is a mail clerk at the Butte post office. Antone Bertoglio was united in marriage to Ethel Mae Winslow. Our Superintendent of Schools, Professor Lowry, was married on Christmas Eve to Miss Monforton, daughter of Remi Monforton of Salesville. She is a graduate of Montana State College. Professor Lowry was an aviator instructor in WWI as a First Lieutenant and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma.

A new priest will be coming to St. Theresa's church as Father English has been sent to Hamilton. He served here for four years.

Our boys did a great job in basketball. They beat Manhattan 23 to 20, Townsend 31 to 14 and Butte Central 25 to 6.

Morrison Cave is now to be known as Lewis and Clark Cavern. This edict comes from the federal government after designating the cavern a national monument. Perhaps this will help with more people visiting our little community.

The Christian Church will have a very interesting and entertaining December program. Genevieve Bondes will provide a piano solo; the choir of six local children, led by the minister, will sing several selections; Myrtle Taylor, Melvin Hanson, Alva Tebay, and Roy Taylor will each provide a recitation and Mary Wolverton will recite "The Shocking Stocking. John McFadden will provide several items of thought, including one for Christmas and Ernest Tebay will recite "The Santa Boy."

The Masons and Eastern Star have announced their officers for the coming year. In the Blue Lodge they are I. B. Mills, Mr. Wentz, Fred Bruner, L. R. Packard (Treasurer), and A. A. Needham (Secretary). For the Eastern Star, Ione Stevens is the Worthy Matron. Her other key officers are Thomas Stevens, Fannie Young and Ella Lepp (Treasurer).

During the fire department's annual meeting, officers were elected, and new members introduced. Our fire chief is S. W. McGlynn. His Assistant Chief is Roll Yotter; department secretary is F. C. Green; treasurer is T. P. Green; the Fire Marshall is Bert Beaver and the Fire Inspector is E. A. Smales. The trustees are James Brennan and Harry Sacry. New members of the department include Robert Martin, Tony Bertoglio, John Bertoglio, T. C. McMurray and J. R. Baird. The fire department had an easy year with only two fires in town. One was near the meat market and the other at the McKay warehouse.

Our Whitehall Concert Band has elected Jasper Yotter as the president and conductor. Dr. Packard will serve as vice-president with T. Greene as Secretary/Treasurer. Mrs. Bowman is the assistant conductor. Rehearsals are held at the theater and they will be playing for a dance on January 21st at the Yellowstone Hall.

If you have not seen it yet, stop by to see the mineral specimens from the Sunlight region that John Reed is showing. They include fossils of fish and shells which shows that the mineral beds in our area were once under water.

For those living on the Pipestone Bench and the Parrott Bench, your new mail delivery routes begin on January 3rd. How nice it will be to not drive for miles to pick up your mail each week. Daily delivery will get the news and the bills to you much faster. Merry Christmas.
