More than two dozen Whitehall area residents will mount up Wednesday, April 24, for Donkey Basketball sponsored by the W-Club. The 7 p.m. event should provide plenty of laughs as four teams of students, teachers and others try to win at hoops from the backs of donkeys amid as many “oops” as “hoops.”

In an effort to raise public awareness and understanding of county government, Jefferson County officials have planned a schedule of activities in observance of National County Government Week, April 21 – 27. “This special week will give citizens the opportunity to see for themselves the wide variety of services provided by the County,” said a statement released by the county commissioners. “We want them to discover, learn and get involved. But most importantly, we want county residents to understand the organization of county government, see how their tax dollars are being spent, and learn how they can get involved in the process.”

April 11 was National DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Day. The DARE program is carried out in Jefferson County schools through the county sheriff’s office. As part of the DARE observance, local DARE officer Geri Goodwin allowed his students in Boulder and Whitehall to celebrate by proclaiming the benefits of DARE in sidewalk chalk art. Among the artwork were renditions of the American flag next to the words “DARE America,” proclamations of DARE as a fun program and warnings against getting started on drugs. But the one Goodwin said he liked best proclaimed, “DARE officer Goodwin is cool.”
