Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: September 12, 1996

SEPTEMBER 12, 1996

Students returning to Tia Kober Elementary and Whitehall Middle School this fall were greeted by grass, flowers, trees and other landscaping thanks to the hard work of the BY’s 4-H Club. Club leader Charlene Dillon said about 18 young people spent four days leveling the ground, putting in sod, installing railroad landscaping ties, and planting the area near the entrances to the schools.

Teachers in the grade school had been working for several years to raise money and gather workers to create a living memorial to former elementary secretary Renee Martinell, Dillon said. Martinell worked for many years with Whitehall students and teachers and is fondly remembered. The end result was an attractive entranceway to both schools and an area in which students can learn about growing things in future years. Bleeding Heart plants, trees and other foliage will be tended by students under the guidance of teachers.

Trojan Athlete of the Week is Heidi Hemund. She was chosen because she scored 31 points in the two games played this last weekend. She also had eleven steals to complete two good all-around games against Twin Bridges and Ennis. She is the daughter of Don and Keri Scheuerman and Vic Hemund.

For the second consecutive year, Whitehall High School has a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist roaming the halls. Senior Matt Mulligan was recently notified that he is one of a select few seniors across the nation. He earned that honor by scoring well on the PSAT, a preliminary college entrance exam given to students their junior year. Mulligan, smiling broadly, said he still has a long way to go to qualify for actual scholarship money. Even if he does not receive a National Merit Scholarship, Mulligan said the semifinalist recognition and his 3.9-plus grade point average “should get me into any college I want. It takes a load off your back,” he added.
