Cafe 1889 Opens Its Doors with Family-Style Home Cooking

"If I say I want something, the next thing I know, Ron has either put it in my cart or, in this case, found a restaurant for me!" Laurie Stolba said with a laugh on Friday, April 15, the opening day of Cafe 1889 in Whitehall.

Stolba says she has always wanted to have her own place, her own cafe, and her husband encouraged it strongly.

"I love her cooking. She's great at it. This is a good fit," Ron said.

Cafe 1889, located at 14 E. Legion, was previously Frankie's Tex Mex, but the location looks nothing but sparkling new.

"We put a lot of work into this, and we're still changing things," Laurie said. The decor is warm and inviting, which is exactly what the Stolbas had hoped for. Laurie would love to see this become the local spot for coffee gatherings, card clubs, meetings, and teen activities.

"On Saturdays, we would like to offer the teenagers a place to hang out, watch a movie on our big screen in the other room, and just have fun," Laurie added.

As a family-style restaurant, there is no set menu, though homemade breakfast pastries, soups in homemade bread bowls, and salads are always available.

"We plan to offer a daily special, with no set menu," Laurie explained. However, the special of the day on Wednesdays will always be her homemade pasties, she noted.

Laurie has ties to Whitehall and is looking forward to being back in the community. She attended school in Whitehall for her eighth and ninth-grade years, and Whitehall native Roy Millegan is her former father-in-law. The cafe currently displays Millegan's photo, the beginning of a wall of honor for local veterans. She and Ron are happy to be in the area and ready to serve delicious food.

Cafe 1889 is open Wednesday to Sunday, 7 AM to 7 PM, and may be reached at 287-7954. Watch for their weekly ad in the Whitehall Ledger detailing their daily special, as well as on their Facebook page.
