Montana is not unfamiliar with the common invasive species known as whitetop (Lepidium drabae), also commonly referred to as hoary cress. This noxious weed is prevalent throughout most of the western United States and has become a significant nuisance for local landowners. You may've read our previous article from earlier this summer, which described this weed. If you did, I would like to provide you with a few updates on recent news and discoveries. If you didn't have a chance to read our...

GEORGIA, I have a question, I (25F) was straightening my hair when my boyfriend’s 11-year-old daughter (Q) asked if I could straighten hers too. I asked her father, who said it was fine, so I did. The next day, I get a call from Q’s mother, furious that I would do this to her daughter’s hair. Apparently, Q had been bugging her mom to do it for a while, and her mom told her no - that she wasn't old enough. I was not aware of this. I told her that I had asked Q’s father before doing it, and he said it was okay. She snapped back at me that I...
The late pastor, Timothy Keller, gave an insightful overview of the exiles in Jeremiah 29 regarding their purpose in the teaching series Gospel in Life. This specific group of priests, elders, prophets, and citizens was held in captivity for 70 years. Jeremiah wasn’t always respected by many of these leaders; in fact, many of these influential leaders tried to kill him. When King Nebuchadnezzar exiled them to Babylon. Jeremiah was challenging them to turn away from their rebellion against God and trust again in His faithfulness, even while t...

Dear Editor, I write to inform Montanans about the real impact of House Bill 231, the property tax bill that recently became law. While marketed as "property tax relief" this legislation creates a massive tax shift that will significantly increase the burden on our agricultural community. During legislative debate, we attempted to highlight a critical flaw in this bill that supporters ignored: Montana's floating mill system means this isn't tax relief-it's tax redistribution. When residential...

How to Choose the Right Home Security System Keeping your home safe has never been more critical-or more accessible. With a wide range of home security systems available today, choosing the right one might feel overwhelming. But with a bit of guidance, you can find a system that fits your needs, budget, and lifestyle. Start with Your Needs: Before shopping for equipment, think about what you want to protect. Do you need cameras to keep an eye on your porch or driveway? Are you more concerned...
Friends of the Third Branch member Betsy Brandborg will be presenting at the regular meeting of Whitehall Indivisible (WI) on July 30, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at the Whitehall School Library. The public is welcome. Two guests from Wisconsin shared their urban political perspectives. They discussed events of the week with us, interspersed with an Epstein-related excerpt from historian Heather Cox Richardson and a snippet of newly-unmuzzled Stephen Colbert. Medicaid changes and immigration policy dominated the conversation. We are watching the...

July 1925. We know that history can repeat itself. Let's hope that some events from July 1925 do not. It was a joyous month with Independence Day celebrations and patriotic activities, and it had its terror-filled moments. The first front page of July focused on earthquakes. A 6.9 quake hit near Townsend on June 27th, destroyed schools and other buildings in Gallatin County, and toppled chimneys in Whitehall. On June 29th, Santa Barbara, California, was struck by a 6.3 quake that caused...

Smile because she lived: The family of Patricia Joan Harding Monforton, with profound sorrow, announces her recent passing. To know Joan was to know the essence of the original spirit of Montana. She was born to the land, a direct descendant of the first pioneers to the picturesque Ruby Valley and the current town of Sheridan, Montana. The last of a vanishing heritage, she'll be forever linked to Montana's founding history. Many of her family's artifacts and memorabilia remain displayed in... Full story

Clark Kinney didn't talk big. He didn't chase attention. But the way he lived? It left a mark-quietly, permanently. He passed away the evening of July 21, 2025, under a Montana sky. He was 82. Born March 24, 1943, in Montrose, Colorado, Clark was shaped by mountains, long days, and the kind of values that never go out of style: show up early, do it right, and mean what you say. In 1964, he married Barbara "Bobbi" Elaine Foley. Together, they built a life that wasn't loud, but it was solid.... Full story
