    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 4, 2019

In late July, Whitehall siblings Dawson and BreeAnne Lanes made the cross-country trip to Orlando for the 2019 Assemblies of God Youth Ministries National Fine Arts Festival. To say they did a great job representing Whitehall would be an understatement. Dawson finished second nationally in the "Rap" category, and BreeAnne finished second in the "Book Chapter" competition. She also received an "excellent" rating in the photo category. The two were among 6,000 participants at the annual festival....

  • COLUMN: The Rotary Phone

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 4, 2019

I'll be the first to admit I spend too much time on my phone and really need to put it down a lot more. It's very addictive and I can certainly see why kids who have been raised with phones spend so much time with them. It's all they know. I'm old enough to remember using a rotary phone so I should know better than to spend hours with my eyes focused on a tiny screen, especially after looking at a computer screen most of the day. • Frank Joseph Heilig

    John Getty|Sep 4, 2019

Frank Joseph Heilig 1/2/1952 – 8/13/20 I would often introduce Frank Heilig as my homeless neighbor. He was that, but he described himself with a far more colorful montage; mountain man, logger, survivalist, mechanic, ham radio operator, provider of security services, fire fighter, former marine and helper to all who ask. Some of his neighbors knew him only as "GI Joe" or "Camo Guy." And some found his dress and demeanor a bit intimidating. But he wrote "I bring people together." I can attest that that was true. I first met Frank in 2007, w...

  • Robert "Lowell" Nelson

    Sep 4, 2019

Robert "Lowell" Nelson passed away peacefully Monday, August 26, in Bountiful Utah, following a 10-month battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. While Lowell lived all over the globe, he was born and raised in southwest Montana, and fiercely loved all things Big Sky: fishing, mountains, rivers, lakes, skiing, mining, ranching, and the history of the wild west. While living in west Africa during the '80's, Lowell's humanitarian aid efforts blessed thousands, attracting international attention and a New York Times article applauding his work. Lowell w...

  • Trojans open season with road win

    Jack H. Smith, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 4, 2019

It was a tremendous start to the season for the Whitehall/Harrison High School football team. Sparked by incredible play on defense, the Trojans picked up their first win of the season last Friday with an impressive 12-7 road win over Cut Bank. Whitehall head coach Dan Lacey said it was a great feeling returning to Cut Bank for the first time since a 2016 playoff victory and grinding out a win in a tough environment. "I was very proud of the unity our team showed on the first long bus trip of...
