Recently I was asked if cold weather causes “cold and flu season.” Many of us have heard that being too cold causes illness. Exposure to moderately cold temperatures does not cause respiratory illness. However, viruses do transmit illness more efficiently in drier, colder conditions because they remain airborne longer. We also tend to spend more time indoors in close contact with one another during colder months. These things create optimal conditions for disease transmission which cause spi...
The final two faded wood panel murals have been replaced with two vibrant, bright, beautiful new murals at the Rocky Mountain Bank and the Billsgary building (K-Bar). The murals were again beautifully created by local Whitehall artist Kit Mather. Kit committed her entire summer and portions of her fall to their completion! The murals were both put in place by Tim Geary and his crew. Tim gave his equipment and labor to ensure that the murals would be put in place securely and safely. Besides Tim,...
As we all know, the owner of the Whitehall Ledger loves everything scary. She also loves Christmas. What a perfect time to introduce Krampus to the community! While the Christmas season is a time of festivity and joy, Krampusnacht is a darker tradition that originated in Germany as a counterpart to the feast dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of children who inspired the tradition of Santa Claus. Krampus brings "gifts" to the naughty children - and sometimes takes them with him. Join us for a holiday party of a whole other kind - lots...
Activities and their revenue, or lack thereof, were the hot topic of the November School Board meeting, held Tuesday, November 7th in the elementary library. Superintendent Hannah Nieskens detailed the total expenses, revenues, and loss of the fall season of sports - which includes Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, and middle school sports. “Our increasing fuel costs, transportation costs (provided by Harlow’s School Bus Service), and costs for MOAs/referees (these rates are determined by the Montana High School Association), have out...

The Barrick Learning Center is almost completely funded. This project will provide Whitehall with a permanent childcare facility dedicated to serving approximately 40 local families annually for years to come with high-quality childcare. We are just $2,500 shy of getting this project completed. Specifically, the funds will be used to prepare the land for electrical hookups. Completing these utility connections is a critical final step before the center can open. There is a demonstrable need for more childcare in Whitehall. Currently, only two...
