Editorial: Residents get the last say on district

The passing of a resolution Tuesday by the Jefferson County Commissioners was another step in the possibility of a new ambulance district. The district, whose boundaries would include the Whitehall School District area with the exception of in town and Madison and Silver Bow Counties, is now on the November 8 ballot.

There has been a great deal of talk the past year about a new ambulance district and to say it has been a controversial subject would be an understatement. There have been many stones cast and it has gotten ugly at times.

The decision has already been made to put the possible district on the ballot and now it will up to the voters in the proposed district. This is Democracy at its best. It will be up to the people who live in the district. It won’t be up to myself and other people who live in town, it will be only those in the district.

We will be finally able to see once and for all what a majority of people in the district want. Other than public safety, isn’t that the most important thing in all of this?

The next few months there will be a lot of information presented to local residents in articles, ads, letters to the editor, and at events like Frontier Days. Those voting will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposed district prior to the election. Whatever the people decide, we hope for level heads and an understanding that this was the voice of the people. JHS
