Garden Club announces September winner

Driving into the yard of Kathy Foster off of Paul Gulch Rd., one is presented with the beautiful mound of bright colors bursting from a large of assortment of perennial and annual flowers. Delphiniums, petunias, dianthus, the purple flash of catmint, the glowing yellow of "Black-eyed Susan's and the contrast colors of Russian Sage are all arranged in a beautiful garden with natural grasses and strategically placed rocks, making your trip over the freeway a visual treat for the eye. Just as you see the beautiful array of flowers, the peacefulness of the landscaped yards brings a sense of calm and tranquility. The yard is surrounded with the shade of trimmed Russian Olive trees with their shaggy tree trunks, adding texture to the gardens, cooling the air and softening all sounds with the music they create from the wind.

Now just because a yard is beautiful does not mean it is not a working yard. We found evidence of this with the large compost pile in progress, the collection of rocks from their pastures used for landscape borders and the garden area. Also the "hidden" trash can holder, built to keep animals and weather out alike, was very clever, functional and designed to add more charm to the yard.

The outline of the yards front and back, with the manicured lawns, the placement of natural grasses, potted plants of color, old growth blue Spruce trees, the beautiful flower beds and the brilliant colors displayed by the crabapple tree is another example of the beautiful yards we can find in Whitehall.

Until next summer, keep those gardens growing, keep your eye on a garden you would like to nominate for the prestigious Golden Spade award for next year, and remember all are welcome to attend the Garden Club meetings. These meetings are informational, inspirational and sensational and can help make a gardener out of anyone!!
