Column: You're not welcome

There are some things that happen every once in a while in life that absolutely blow my mind. Last week was a perfect example.

I had stopped for coffee at a local convenience store and was making my way out of the building when someone opened the door for me. I politely thanked the man who seemed to be in his late 20's or early 30's. What came next confused me to the point it rendered me silent. He proceeded to tell me "You're not welcome".

At first I thought I must had heard him wrong, but I didn't. That was exactly what he said, I'm 100 percent sure of it.

I couldn't get words out of my mouth before he wandered into the store and I walked to the car. I was mad I could not get the words out of my mouth. I should have said something. I had so many questions!

First of all, why did he say that? I had never seen the guy in my life so I have no idea where this came from.

I thought maybe he knew me from the paper. In this business you can never please everyone so maybe he read something he didn't like. Maybe he hates my weekly column and wanted me to know it in a subtle way. In this case I would have told him to not read it and all would be well with the world.

I don't have much of a social life outside of work, so I'm sure I've never run into this guy around town.

I also thought maybe he didn't like the looks of me or perhaps was having a bad day. I'm hoping it was just a bad day because the whole ordeal sent my mind spinning. Even if it was a bad day, why did he even hold the door open? Was it his way of doing the right thing, but at the same time showing that he had gotten woken up at 4 a.m. by a wild pack of barking dogs.

I will never know the answer to this question unless the mysterious man comes into the office and tells me. I would really like to know.

Despite what happened, I am glad he held the door for me. I had a hot cup of coffee and too many times in my life I've had someone quickly use the other door or shut a door behind me.

So in a weird kind of way, I was happy with the guy because I have a knack for spilling coffee all over everything. So thanks for getting the door, there are just so many questions!
