Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Mining City Star headed to Whitehall

The auditions for the Mining City Star are coming to Whitehall.

Local residents will get to see if they have what it takes to win the all ages and all genre musical competition.

The Whitehall auditions will take place February 15 at Legends Bar and Grill starting at 6:30 p.m.

Event founder Natasha Richter said the audition process is super simple and informal. She said all people need to do is show up with a song and the accompanying music on CD. She said if someone might not have picked the best song to showcase their voice, they may be asked to sing a different song, but added there is not a lot of pressure. Those who will be moving to the semifinals March 4 and 5 at Front Street Station in Butte will be told the night of the audition.

Richter founded the event eight years ago. She said in her many years of competing she would have to travel all over Montana and out of state. She wanted to put together a community event for what she called a very talented group of singers in Southwest Montana.

Richter said those who will be looking to become the 2017 Mining City Star would be competing against defending champion Shanell McCracken of Whitehall.

She said previous winners of the event have gone to perform in Nashville, and one has published his music on ITunes.

Richter also stressed how the event is unique because it is open to all ages and musical genres. She said they have had kids as young as three and seven audition, and people are more than welcome to perform as a group, play with an instrument, or perform original music.

The 2017 Mining City Star will have prizes for a 14 year old and over division, and a 13 and under division.

The 14 and over prizes are $1,000 and jewelry from Jensen Jewelers for first, $500 for second, and $300 for third.

The prizes for the younger division are $200 for first, $100 for second, and $50 for third.

The registration fee is $20.

The finals are scheduled for April 23 at Fairmont Hot Springs.
